I have noticed with some knives I can slice through phone book paper one way (length-side) effortlessly but when it comes to Slicing against the grain width wise it snags. Does this mean my knife isint that sharp? Or is my edge too thick? I see people slicing phone book paper width wise all the time. Thanks for the help. I use phone book paper

Any one of these things, or a combination of any or all of them, can get in the way of clean slicing through phonebook paper:

  • Not fully apexed
  • Thick(ish) edge angle
  • Burrs or wire edges
If your edge is actually snagging/grabbing the paper, that usually indicates burrs/wires on the edge (at least). When not fully apexed or if the edge angle is too thick, that usually makes the edge simply slide over the paper without biting/cutting into it (although burrs/wires on the same thick/rounded edge will still snag).

Watch closely to see exactly which portions of the edge are snagging in the paper, and perhaps even mark those areas on the blade with a Sharpie. Then focus on refining & cleaning up any burrs/wires that may be there (stropping). Go about it gently; you're likely very close to being there, as indicated by good slicing in one direction. Shouldn't take too much to get it working in the other axis.

What David above said, and there is a difference in the grain of most thin phone book paper, which will make it harder to cut one way over the other. If you can get it to cut easily in either direction then you have achieved a good edge on your knife.

Thank you for the replies. I feel as there is no burr but I just don't know. Most of my knives can't slice it width wise with ease. I will post a picture later.
