Slight Endura handle reprofile

I thought I'd share this of a slight modification to an Endura 4 handle. I love the Endura and the ergonomics were pretty good but when I held it in a stronger grip to carve some wood or whatever, that first bump just always dug into my finger and the knife just started feeling a tad "off." I sold a blue Endura a few months back partly due to this but just picked up a new orange E4 from BHQ, along with a new Delica to replace one I had to sell at the time as well.

I've ran across some other posts in the past about something similar but thought folks might enjoy a photo comparison and also up some discussion. I'll probably be passing the brown E4 along soon, color is cool though, but in the meantime, it's fun to be able to compare the two.

The stock Endura handle feels pretty good to me when I pick it up but when I actually adjust to really use it, it just feels a bit uncomfortable and I found myself not really excited about using it when I carried it. I found myself reaching for the Delicas my daughters were carrying on hikes and realizing they felt more comfortable.

I mostly used the blue Delica to do the shaving work which I thought was fun and appropriate. :) I gradually shaved the bump down, tried the fit in hand, shaved more, and finally got to the point where it is pretty solid. I might continue to adjust it over time. I hit it with some fine sandpaper at the end and tried to rub in some oil to bring the slight color change back inline.

I usually like to keep things pretty stock but felt like this was a change to be made for me. Does anyone else feel that way about the Endura, love it but slightly off ergonomics wise? Comments are thoughts are welcome!

Looks good. Neat hack. Mine lines up perfectly with my hand.
However, I did take some 1500 grit to the inside edge of the scales. They were sharp and cut into my fingers some when I torqued down on grip. Then while at it, I smoothed out the edges on the SpiderHole and top of the blade. Then worked on smoothing the lock release. You can't tell I did it by looking, but when I hold it, with girly ass hands like mine, I can really feel a difference. It felt so much better, I did my Pacific too.

The Endura fits my hand well, but there are others that the finger grooves don't line up. I like what you did by making it a more neutral handle. Good work!

I share your issue. I don't like the Endura for just that reason. Your mod looks good and I think it would work for me too.

I realized long ago that the Stretch is just a better knife for me in every way and haven't looked back.

Blee, thanks! RicFlair, appreciate you explaining your customizations. I think the best customizations are the ones where you can't really tell by looking but totally know when you are using.

Thanks! My fingers line up well when I initially grip the Endura, maybe in the same position as the Delica, but when I got ready to do some work, my hand spaces out with the handle, ready to hunker down, and it just never feels quite right.

I've been wondering about the Stretch but haven't yet had a chance yet to get my hands on one. I'd like to, though. From pics, I wasn't sure of how it would fit compared to the Delica and Endura but have been very curious. Thanks for the feedback!

I like all three, but the shining star in my opinion is the Stretch. The Delica is just a little small for my liking, and the Endura just a tad bit unbalanced for my use. The Stretch nullified all of those issues for me. Ergos are super, excellent from gripping for heavy cutting all the way to pinch grips for detailed stuff. I also like the way it carries just a bit more.

I really like the Endura. It is my second favorite Spydie after the Delica. I have exactly this problem with my large hands. That first bump hits me in the wrong place. I performed the exact mod you did and it has worked out perfectly. It did not take long, either. I took a fine grit diamond stone and smoothed it out and it looks factory original.

I'd love to get my hands on a stretch but the price has just been a little bit too much each time I've looked at it. Looks solid, though, and might pick up one someday. DocT - awesome about your mod!
