I have a Gerber MKII I bought in the late 70's when I was a sargent in the infantry (scout platoon). I got out in 1980 and put the knife away and unfortunetely haven't looked at it for long time (26 years I guess if I do the math). Anyways I have some black, what looks to be some pitting, on this blade. I used to work in a gun shop and I was thinking that some 000 steel wool with some oil would probably remove this. Anyone with more experience with knife blades have a better solution.

Yes, I am aware what a mortal sin this is. I don't need reminding. :D :o

I think you have the right idea. The 0000 steelwool is fine enough so that it will not jigger up the blade to much. You can always use emery cloth afterwards to polish it.

If you are not trying to save the knife as a collectible you might just use the wire wheel on your grinder. That would be the fastest way to remove the rust. Then you could put it on the polishing wheel and shine it up a bit.

A wire wheel will leave a terrible finish on a knife. 0000 steel wool is softer than the blade steel, and should not scratch the blade.

Thanks guys. I'll try the 0000 steel wool with some oil and see what happens.
