Slight Rattle In Handle

I remember reading something about this in another long ago thread, but couldn't find it so thought I would just ask again.

A standard katana I just got from HI has a slight rattle in the handle. Not a big deal, but noticeable. I recall reading that this was just from some loose laha material in the handle, and that there was a relatively easy way to fix it?

Thanks for any info.

Regards,

Norm

If you can get some superglue in there, it will melt the laha. When it resolidifies, the rattle should be gone.

Norm?

I'd swear it was just a matter of heating it a bit, but I'm wrong a lot these days. :(

And, bubbling up like swamp gas in my mind is the thought that superglue melts laha (waiting for my yaya), but even if I'm correct, dunno how you get it in there.

These things being said, I'll go now.

Thanks! I seem to remember something about heating the handle as well. I suppose though I could just drill a small hole in the brass butt cap and pump it full of superglue, and then melt brazing rod or something to fill up the hole?

Appreciate the feedback.

There was a thread a long time ago about this. I had the same problem once.

I believe it was Federico who suggested heating (very carefully) the blade in front of the bolster which will cause the laha to melt and then resolidify. It worked for me. YMMV. :)

I heated the handle over the burner of my gas stove slightly and it worked. Unfortunately every time I chopped something it came loose again

Finally the handle cracked and I took it off only about 30% of the space was filled there in the bolster. I put a new handle and filled it with acraglas and now it NEVER rattles :)

Too hot to try melting any metal to fill hole in assembled buttplate.

If you want a hole easier to refill,
then put it thru the handle material
& fill with epoxy after you're done.

or drill hole in handle , or two holes,
and inject/pour epoxy or other material into void.

Try gentle heating of the handle to remelt laha.
maybe wrap the grip in a roasting bag & put it down in boilin water.
The roasting bag will keep everything dry
& and stand up to the heat no proble,

Had the same problem with a pen-knife once. I heated up the handle in boiling water, waited and after that the rattling was gone and did not return. Of course the katana handle is bigger and it is wooden - do not know if this will work like it did on the small Pen-knife horn-handle.

Dunno but I think wood doesn't conduct heat very well. You might have to dip it in the hot water longer than the horn handles.
