Slightly customized and cerakoted, plus some chopping/finish wear testing

Finally got these back from my cerakote guy-very slightly customized 7, and a convexed 9 that's otherwise unfiddled:

I'm interested to see how the cerakote fares on a convexed blade-never tried it before. Both are done in patriot brown

Nice. A trip to the Cerakoter is in my BK7s future. Cerakote has held up pretty well on my my EDC blade.

The cerakote seems to be holding up even on a convexed edge-some wear, but this is seasoned beech.

However a convexed bk9 seems to be almost too bitey-had to smack it loose several times

Those look awesome, Jim - though I was hoping maybe you'd had the 4 you'd modified Cerakoted. The Cerakote on the EDC I got from you is holding up well - though I haven't done any chopping with it ;).

unless you are restoring an old 4, or heavily reprofiled a camillus 4, ceracoat is a waste imho ;)

yeah yeah, sorry, i don't like the last gen BK4. suck it :D too thin. sorry Ethan.

i still haven't beat the coating off a BK21 yet, but that parked, or cera'd, would be nice.

Cerakote on a truly convexed profile is as Bladite said, kinda a waste.
On the 9 only the edge got convexed (maybe 3/8" back) so that'll limit the wear some.

Chopped up a bunch of ironwood today-combo of branches and small logs-the 9 bites really deep, and it does stick especially in wood that hard. Did a little comparison:

Jest bolo the same size, couple ounces heavier and a full convex grind.
The 9 took 50 strikes (big darn log), the JEST took 42-now a difference of 8 blows is nothing. Funny thing is the JEST took half the time, because with the heavier convex it didn't stick (this is not a critique of the BK9-if it's a critique of anything it's of my decision to convex it out)
I should've left the secondary bevel on the 9 instead of modding it.
The geometry on the nine is more like an original Filipino JEST which was built for bamboo rather than hardwood

dude, is your jest bolo got a few dings in the tip area of the blade? what did it hit, a nail? I ask that because whenever my blades got that way sure as hell...it's a nail....

Those aren't dings-that's dirt. The HT on that is pretty nail resistant.
