Slightly loosened handlescales

Hello!

I just got my full tang khukuri and ofcourse I had to test it! I know khukuris are known to be choppers but wow what a performance!

However, right after little use I noticed that the other scale got loose. At one point, I can see light coming through. So I was thinking I could epoxy glue that thing since it has worked for other choppers too.

Anything to note on that? Just simple gluejob? I reckong I should get all sorts of thin tools to fill those gaps as much as possible.

Kind of stupid questions and obvious, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Hello A.L

Welcome to H.I!

If i beat Karda fast enough with this, may i ask which model is it?

And some pics will do better?

My ASTK model has some cracks on the tang and i thought about welding it.
Scrapped that idea (with tons of load on the spring steel and reinforced with hollow forge, what was i thinking?) and now it's chuckin logs like mad.

Help us to help you.:)

You're right on target A.L. Epoxy is the way to go. IIRC, a longer-setting epoxy is stronger than a quick-set and was recommended for a long term fix. Let it set, trim it as needed and you're good to go. Great tools, aren't they? Welcome and any other question feel free to ask.

I didn't want to mention the model since Im not sure if it's from HI.. :/ (I got it from retailer). It's called "dotted panawal khukuri".

I can't post photos right now, sorry. Will take later. The handle is quite full of tiny holes and cracks and filling them with epoxy should work well. I'll surely report later on this.. At this time Im away from my fixing gear.

edit: and thanks for the welcome!
I had one khukuri before but I had to sold it when I was a bit short on money. Im trying to fix that now. :)

You could also try using some liquid super glue. The stuff cracking off is probably laha and super glue both melts and solidifies the laha pretty dang well. If not, epoxy is a great way to go:thumbup:

Epoxy would be to keep the scale to the tang. If there are cracks in the handle, as Steely suggested a Super Glue would we good for that...especially for horn handles.

I haven't seen any cracks in the cales itself, just that the scales are a bit harshly fitted.

'dotted panawal khukuri' sounds like a 'khukri house' one, not bad but not quite up to HI standards for fit & finish. fix is the same tho.

If you're seeing the cracks in "black stuff" where the scale meets the tang, then Steely is right in suggesting a Super Glue. If the loose scale can be held in place where it should be, Super Glue will melt the "black stuff" (or laha, the homemade Nepali glue) and allow it to reset.

The dotted panawal is not an H.I. khukuri. It is a Khukuri house product that is sold thru them and various retailers. Somtimes they don't get enough Laha under the scale and they can come loose. The best fix for this would be to inject Long setting epoxy under the scale with a syringe. If you cant get under there you may have to pry the scale up a bit, expoxy the heck out of it and then clamp it good.

Great, thanks a lot!
I'll promise I will get to the HI stuff eventually. ;)
