Slightly unusual harness question...

I was reading the thread about the top ten tools to carry with you a little while ago, having just finished one of the backpack threads, when a thought struck me.

Backpacks, while generally useful to the extreme for carrying all your junk around, have two drawbacks for a guy like me who's on a college campus most of the time and walking around a pedestrian-friendly city the rest of the time. Drawback one is that they're heavy as hell when loaded down, drawback two is that you have to stop and take the backpack off your back to get at the gear in it.

A messenger bag helps solve part of that (I actually got a very nice one from the Dave Matthews Band web site, if you'll believe it)by reducing the load you can carry and allowing you to swing it so that the bag is facing your front rather than your back, but it's still cumbersome when all I want is to carry my EDC stuff, like a knife, cell phone, keys, flashlight, maybe a powerbar or two and a nalgene bottle without making my pockets sag like an elephant's balls.

What I'd really love to find is a harness like the custom one someone had in an animated gif on the backpack thread, but styled in a fashion that wouldn't make my fellow students (especially the cute, tight sweater wearing female kind of student) shy away from "the scary kid with the army gear and vacant stare."

Something that looks like a backpack without the backpack, with pockets and straps and such on the harness itself would be ideal. Khaki is pushing it, olive drab is a no-no, and camouflage is absolutely out.

If you have such a thing, better still - we can take it to the trade forum and deal with it there. But even suggestions as to what brand, style, where it can be found et cetera would be great.

Any help y'all can give would be much appreciated.

You might want to check out the thread I started entitled "Nite Ize !!!!!!". There are some excellent options listed, if all you want to carry is what you mentioned above. If that doesn't work, what about a waistpack or small fannypack ?

I wouldn't try some fancy harness to hold your gear, thinking this will impress the chicks!

the Back Pack is your best bet. Get a smaller pack with a GREAT strap/hip belt set-up. Like the Becker Patrol Pack. It seems that the bigger you go in a pack, the more crap you will carry around. Lighten your load, and wear the hip belt when going distances greater than 20 feet!

Chicks don't dig Batman utility belts. This is as fundamental to nature as Planck's constant is!

LOL! No, I'm not looking for a utility belt. I was asking if there is already something in existance I might have missed that is functionally what that harness on the other thread is without being that harness. Some kind of light backpack that maybe has a water bottle pocket and cell phone pocket on the straps or something.

There was an spread of funky new backpacks in last month's Maxim, I think, but my brother has my copy. Something like one of those.

Is this what you are talking about?

Somehow from reading your original post this is not what I thought your were talking about. I've seen this thing. It's.. interesting...looks like you could ride this thing like a personal mini tobogan on a ski slope

It is a ridgid pack and seems larger then its actual carring capasity due to the hard shell. It has a scalloped portion where you can lash things like a football or skateboard to. Not my thing but if you like...

Good luck in your search.

The neat thing about those is that they look hip enough that no-one's going to think twice about the fact that I've got rip-offs all over the front straps. Also, they're ergonomically correct and I've got a bad back.

It's not what I originally was thinking of, but Crayola kind of hammered home the point that what I originally had in mind was retarded.

I saw the funky backpacks/bags in Stuff (the Leah Remini cover...yum).

Check out www.newsungear.com; they've got some backpack-type bags that have waist belt pouches and a lower CG.

I've got the Deluxe Sling bag by YakPak (www.yakpak.com) that does pretty well, but the nylon isn't really super tough. I went back to an old REI backpack for the rainy season since the sling bag's zipper design doesn't seem as water resistant.

I forgot to recommend the Mountainsmith line of lumbar packs. If you get the strapettes, it functions similarly to a backpack. I've got both the Tour pack and the Day pack with strapettes. I usually use them in the summer when I don't carry as much clothing.

If you've got a bad back, definitely go for a waist pack rather than a back pack or harness -- lower the load. Take a look at the variety in the Campmor catalog. Some of them are very inexpensive, and many of them now come with a water bottle pouch on the outside.

You might also want to check out this thread. Moa sked about not-so-tactical packs, and Javahead posted pics of new packs from Blackhawk. The first one on the pic there looks like anice sized, compact pack which comes with a hydration system, if I remember correctly. Or, a becker Patrol Pack from Eagle is a top of the line pack. 1100 cubic inches in the main compartment and you can clip ALICE gear on the webbing which is located ont he pack and the hip belt. A pack with a good hip belt will be easier on your back, and putting a nice sized utility pouch on the hip belt of a Becker may give you the versatility you are looking for. Especially if you get a Camelback bladder and hose, so you can drink on the move.

Good luck on your search! The pack you linked to looks interesting. I know nothing about them. But good luck to you in finding what you want. And please keep us posted as to what you do end up with!

AlecWire, just a little tid-bit for your next cocktail party....
It is not possible for anything to "sag like an elephant's balls".
Elephant testicles are carried inside the body. Just one of the many useless bits of trivia inside my head. A related bit of elephant trivia.... they also have skeletal muscle in their penises. This means they can move it/make it grow at will. Dang, that would come in handy sometimes!:D

I would say a decent lumbar/waist pack would be what you're looking for, and if it's not too heavily loaded, and you're in the presence of the fashion police, you could sling it over one shoudler a la messenger bag.

A small sling pack may be what you want. I was in "Old Navy" the other day looking at their new ones. $20.00 or so, and would seem to hold what you had mentioned. Crayola is right, the bigger the pack, the more you tend to carry. The sling pack I have now came from "Structure's"(I think. It was a gift) It's working well. I've had it 2 years now and carry it everyday to work.
Here is a link to the "Old Navy" pack:

They have a few more color choices in the store.

Thanks a lot, all of you!

I decided on the boblbee, because it's deceptively small and it has lumbar support. Another nice feature is that you can get a metric assload of accessories from bottles to strap pouches from the manufacturer. Also, it's a hard pack, which means I'm not going to worry as much about smashing my camera or CD player.

The Becker Patrol Pack's my next step if this one doesn't work out. I don't really need a hydration system, and the Becker's got a ton of outside pockets and D rings. I seem to remember someone saying they used to offer them in non-military-oriented colors. Does anyone know where I could get one of those?
