Slip joint EDC?

Can somebody recommend a basic, good quality slip joint for EDC? I have an old Uncle Henry stockman and Old Timer stockman somewhere, but I will probably never find them after the move. Just looking for a suggesting on manufacturer, style, blade steel. Not really collecting (or if I do, this is the first one). I can buy a nicer one, too, if it makes sense, but I don't know that I will reshape the blade as people seem to be doing for the Queen D2 blades.

Really depends on what your everyday needs will be. Will you be using it basically just to open envelopes and trim the occasional string, or do you do a lot of heavier work?

Personally, my current favorite is a Case Med. Stockman in Amber Bone with CV blades. It came razor sharp out of the box, and does a great job of opening my mail and slicing the occasional apple.

I recently bought a case sodbuster jr in tru sharp with the black handle and could not be happier. It was super sharp and holds and edge well. Additionally, it fits in the pocket well and is really comfortable to hold and use. The cheap price of the sodbuster made it a virtual no brainer. $18 at the local lowes. Another personal favorite is the full size trapper. A little larger, but still a good pocket carry.

How do you dress every day?

Blue collar in jeans, Carhart jacket? Or office wear coat and tie?

It all will make a difference in what will be comfortable in your pocket. Casual dress, yes I'd go with freekboi, a good stockman is hard to beat.

Coat and tie, opening mail, lunch wrap, try a peanut. But be warned, peanuts are addictive. Dress pants can't carry what jeans can, but not vise versa.

And then there's the sodbuster...

Good point jackknife, about the style of dress affecting the style of knife to be carried. An office setting requiring slacks will require a more subdued knife than a sodbuster or trapper. The peanut is perfect for that application IMHO. I have one that I received as a gift from my uncle, blue bone handle, specifically for opening mail. Perfect little knife for opening packages and mail and such tasks.

4fingers,
Quit messing around,go to blade, get a Bose shadow pattern.
BTW Welcome to Bladeforums.

Case medium stockman in CV is a great suggestion. My personal favorite for EDC is a Moore Maker yellow 3 7/8" punch blade stockman made by Camillus. You can get it in standard stockman configuration if you want. You can get it in a smaller size or with buffalo horn handles if either of those suit your taste. Blades are 1095 carbon steel.

Since Camillus isn't around any more you won't be able to get these for long, but they are still very plentiful.

Here's mine:

amber bone cv, pocket worn red peanut - how does that sound?

I do wear jeans to work most days, but I don't move anything other than keys on a keyboard. California...

I don't know that I would carry a knife with, say, Khakis, cause I think it would just fall out anyway.

Two good choices, just watch the rest of those fingers so it won't be too hard to type and let us know what you think of 'em after you've carried them a bit.

Two great choices. As I said, the amber bone cv med stockman is my personal favorite, and I'm currently considering purchasing a peanut for those dressier occasions.

Come on, now that you found this forum, we all know that it's too late...
You'll have more than just one slippie :)
I'm living in a modern world, there are few tasks that ask for a special blade.
Normally it's peeling an apple, opening a letter or parcel, cutting a flower or stick, things like that.
So I'm carrying what fit's best to my mood and dress (normally jeans, T-shirt).
Mostly a rigger-knife, good bladeshape and as I was born at the sea and I feel a little nostalgic, it takes it's way in my pocket.
Lately often a big spanish navaja, it fit's better in the scenery here, with rough mountains, pineforrests, the big blade is great to prepare lunch...
when dressing up, or on sunday, a Laguiole from Fontenille Pataud.
when I go camping, a SAK Farmer and another big slippie.

EVERYTHING in carbon steel! (well, the SAK..) for my tast, a traditional pattern with stainless steel is like an oldtimer car with ABS, ESP and xenon-lights - it doesn't fit.

so, buy what you like and what fit with your mood, soon you'll buy another one and every day it will get more dificult to choose what fit's.

have fun

I got a CV stockman, and a black peanut (SS). I also ordered a boker subcom, and ending up getting 5 (!) because people thought it looked so cool they piled on the order.

I'll give a report once I get them. Thanks for all the help!

Congrats fingers!

You'll keep buying more....I know I have.

Let us know how you like them, especially the CV stockman! A red bone one may be in my future.

If you like the Boker, you may want to consider them for your next slipjoint. Lots of reasonably priced carbon steel ones!

Well why not get another Schrade. Good knife at a good price

How about a Case CV pen knife-perfect size for an EDC-slim and useful-has a larger clip point blade and a smaller pen blade-i just got one and I think it fit the bill!!!

1. Yellow handle CV Sodbuster Jr.
2. Yellow handle CV medium Stockman

I love both those Case knives. Traditional and simple but tough.
I don't know why, but I have become very attached to the yellow handles.

Funny you mention that, Hoss. I thought that I'd find the yellow Sodbuster Jr. butt ugly. But it's had just the opposite effect on me. I find it difficult to take out of my daily rotation. (My other yellow handles are the congress, clip point mini copperlock and wharncliffe copperlock. All CV of course.)

OK - Here ya go! This is not a true EDC though, cause I only carry it about 3 days out of 4... - And it's probably larger than you are thinking of - this one is 3 7/8" long

Something unique about the yellow handles. They are like close friends.
