Slip Joint makers, do you have your templates hardened?

The template for the shield is 1095 and not hardened.

Is it best to hardened it?

I am getting my set up for inlays and came across a post on Knifedogs that talk about needing it to be hardened.

But on USA knifemakers it mentioned most makers do not harden them.

What is your experience?

Yes. I do. Why wouldn't you? They'll wear out much quicker if you don't. When your cutting bit is touching the edge there will be some amount of wear on the template.

I get them as hard as I can, then light temper to keep them hard but a little less brittle.. Just be careful when clamping down to your work.

Out of like 14 shields that I have parser plates for they are all hardened ats-34. I use them to
scribe my shields out of 410, and then use them to run my bit in to cut the cavity, no noticeable
wear in like 10 years.

I hardened mine, then got a new carbide bit and destroyed it after about 6 shields. Next time I’ll be a little more careful.
