With Tim Herman's help I'm fixin to make my first slip joint!!!
I dug through my folder drawings and found one of a two blade folding hunter pattern that I've had for several years and wanted to make sooooooo bad.
Here's my question;
Since this knife has two blades sittin side by side I was thinking about putting a regular steel pivot through the blades, the liners, and the center divider, and then running a pin through it and piening them into the bolsters so it will look like a traditional slip joint.
My reason for this idea is I don't want to depend on a pin alone for the pivot on a big folder that someone is going to take out in the boonies and attack a grizz with. :)
Ok maybe not a grizz but maybe a rabid squirrel or somethin!
Anyway, what do you guys think about the steel pivot in the slip joint idea?
If someone else has already come up with this, I'm sorry, I do not mean to steal your idea. I just thunkt it up and wanted to know it it would fly.
Thanks guys!!!

L6, I guess no one knows, but yes it'll work just fine, I've built many slip joints with a treaded pivot and screws but a pin going though should work the same with no prob. I also put .005 bronze washers in my slips, works very smooth.

Thanks Don!!!!!
I had thought about making the hunters screw together but figured folks that would want slips would want em more traditional so I figured I should stay with pins. Maybe I will just go with screws after all. Do you use a smaller pivot in the back spring pivot point or just use a pin there?
Thanks for any help you can give me!!!

L6, I usually use a pin in the back spring area, it's just easyer. Never tried a smaller pivot there but I have used screws to hold the back springs and liners in place like I do with a linerlock. I have also put a pin through the liners and springs in the midle of the knife, then put a screw right behind it to pull everything up tight. Kind of hard to explain but I hope this helps.

Here's a slip I did with screws, the pivot is just like a linerlock, goes through the liners and bolsters, flush screws hold the knife together under the ivory scales, works out pretty good.
Also, an 1/8'' steel pin for a pivot is plenty strong for the knife you want to build, I've done them this way also.

edit, sorry the first one is a linerlock but I've done this pattern in a slip also. The second one is a slip built the way I said above.

What are you using for liners Don? Will titanium work ok? I just understood what you meant about the flush cut pin for the back spring while I was admiring the mother of pearl folder! No screws or piening needed that way, how smart can ya get!

L6, (I like your handle) I use mostly titanium but I have used stainless also.
I used to make a lot of slips in the traditional way with NS liners and bolsters, soldered and pined together but not much in the last few years.

My only concern with peening a pin through a normal barrel type pivot pin, is that the pin is threaded on the inside. Pinstock that will slip through it will leave a void inside where the threads are.
Theoretically, the pivot pin will be held in place by the liners around it, and the pin through the middle is only there to clamp things down, but it seems like the void left in the threads could be a cause for problems.
I know you have a lathe, so maybe your making your own pivots and don't plan on threading this one, that ought to work great. You might want to consider reaming out the threads to make a smooth hole that matches your pinstock if your using a pre made pivot though
