just curious, when assembling a slip joint does everyone use the sharpened pin method or is there a clamping device that would compress the spring and allow the pins to be inserted without hammering? just looking for a better wheel if thats possible.

thanks

I use a shrapened center pin. if you find you are having to beat it in your spring is to tight. I can set the pin with just a couple of taps and still have a nice pull.

thanks Sean, how do you measure pull i know several people give weights for that how does that work?

The way we measure pull is "0" will fall open itself, "10" is pliers.
A small drill press vise works great if you're putting the pin in from the center.
I have a vise I made (very similar to a panavise) with a small thin finger that
puts pressure on the spring from the inside either front or back. Most often
I can put the pin in with my fingers and no vise at all and still have a "5" on the
pull scale. Hope this helps.
Ken.

thanks Ken, you do some really nice work. I understand the vise but I don't think I understand the pull measurement. Is there any referance on this that I could look up?

Its not a hard and fast scale but more subjective. As far as I know there is no tool or scale to measure the pull. Like Ken said a 0 would fall open and a 10 would be almost unopenable. Along those lines, a 5 can still be "pinched" (opened by plucking the blade between the thumb and fore finger) an 8 to 9 would be a "nail buster".

Most makers shoot to have a "5" which is a good smooth pull.

Hope this helps

I use a block of wood to hold the knife in position and the drill press (without the motor running) to compress the spring. In the early stages when the spring is still too strong just driving the sharpened center pin will oblong the center pin holes.

I am fascinated with slip joint knives and this prompted the question about DVD instruction (another post). I do have some reading material and a couple of tutorials but this "sharpened pin method " that appears to be pretty rudimentary for most, is foreign to me.
Where can I find information on this topic?
Though I know pretty much nothing about slip joints or folders in general I am well versed on forging and basic metallurgy.

Thanks for any help.

Go to Bruce Bump's sub forum on Knifedogs and check out his slip joint WIP. All, i mean almost everything ya need to know about making a slip joint, will be revealed.

Thanks Bruce & Bruce and PocketEdge. I know all your work and met B. Bump at the Boise show. Pocket edge, I enjoy watching your new work (ebony dogleg, Lil buster ...did I get that right?)
Anyway thanks again for giving me a direction.
best,
Dean
