Re: Zoe Crist folder, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=825636
I started to ask this in his thread but didn't want to hijack it. What type of screws did he use to attach the handles? Where can I purchase them? I just finished my first (crude) slip joint and those screws look like a better idea. I have looked at several knife dot.coms but all I find are larger corby's, loveless bolts, ect. The micro corbys might work but don't have the torq screws exposed. How do these work? Thanks

Probably. There are some slip joint makers that always use the screws. I had decided that if I start on the slip joints, that's what I would use ---well at least for the first dozen or so.

I think your right about the screws, but how are they attached, is there a sleeve? Do you tap the spring and liners? That's not much to screw two screws into (~.16", .032 for each liner and .093 for spring). A screw from either side has to anchor into something.

A good question, in fact.
Like I said I don't make slip joints but I do make liner locks. I like using 0X80 size screws. They are not very big.I mount the bolsters on a liner either .040 or .050 titanium linerInow have two handles with bolsters that have to be ground to fit around the liner. The screws were put in to a depth below the surface that I decided on. I then grind the bolsters to very near size. To do this I use a 60 grit ceramic belt running full speed. I have NEVER had a screw pull out or break off. On one occasion When I was showing a maker how to do the bolster grinding I hardly started this sizing when he made me stop. He told me he expected that piece was to be history. To see some of my folders, please go to customknifegallery.com and scroll down on the left hand side to find me. Frank

Thanks for your replies. I thought the screws went into the spring and replaced the pins, after looking closely I see that the screws only hold the scales. The spring pins are probably peened and ground flat then the scales attached.
Frank, I wouldn't have guessed that 0.05 purchase would hold the scales. by the way you make some beautiful knives.

Hi sorry for getting to this thread late but I missed it :) I use pins for the pivot and spring. Some use screws with a barrel sleeve for the pivot but I use screws once on a spring and the threads are weak points and the screws broke. The screws on the scale are tapped into the liners. The are 0-80. Some with #4 torx others with spine. I like the spline better..I have the name of the man I get all my screws taps and drill and couter sinks from in the shop. If you need it I can get it and post later here for you.. If you have any other question please fell free to ask...
