Slip Joint Recommendations?

Gentlemen, I'm faced with a dilemna. Locking folders aren't exactly... legal where I'm from (which doesn't stop me from carrying em) but I'd like a few edc options that are on the less illegal side of things. I'd just feel a bit better going into more "public" places with a knife that wasn't banned. Many thanks.

I love slip joints, GEC makes some really nice ones, but a Svord peasant knife is a pretty great alternative.

No matter how well a slip joint is made I always have that nagging feeling in the back of my mind that the blade will close on my finger. I trust my peasant knife as much as any locking blade.

The Buck 301, or 303, is a nice utilitarian choice, I prefer the more substantial 301, but sadly the yellow delrin covers are no longer offered.

SAKs and Sodbusters are about the only slipjoints I carry. The Svord Peasant is interesting too, but it is somewhat bulky. The UKPK looks interesting, but I have no firsthand experience with one.

How about a SAK alox electrician or similar? Great edc tool. And the colored alox versions stand out.

I would suggest you move over to the Traditional Forum where there are gobs of threads on slip joints and especially those made by GEC (Great Eastern Cutlery). Lots of different sizes to choose from. GEC lists their vendors on their website. You won't see a great deal of variance in pricing due to GEC setting minimum pricing (so I'm told). A lot of the really pricey ones are limited edition knives at the various vendor websites. If you stay away from Stag and knives under 4" closed, you can pretty much find a great selection under $100.

These are not Case knives. These are not Queen knives. GEC generally makes a better knife in my opinion.

I might add that I EDC a Victorinox swiss army knife (Adventurer model). Its about 4.25" closed.

What are some of your other requirements? Size, price, materials, etc. Would really help narrow things down. Or you can pop over to traditionals and look through what some of us are carrying.

As long as it's small and light enough for me to carry and around 60 bucks or under. Sorry for the lack of specificity. And if I'd known there was a traditionals forum I wouldn't have posted here. I'm kinda new here so I'm still feeling my way around, my apologies.

I like carbon steel slipjoints and have been very pleased with Case and Great Eastern Cutlery.

There are quite a few Case CV steel knives that will probably fit your needs and budget. The Sodbuster Jr. Is porbably the most bang for your buck, I also like the medium stockman in CV and chesnut bone but the one I've been using the most lately is the slimline trapper in CV and red bone.

For $60 or less, the only GEC models you could get are the Bull Nose (sodbuster) and the Hayn Helper.

In your price range, you can find decent knives from Case, Buck, and Boker. Also a few from Eye Brand, although most will be out of your price range. Although I haven't handled one myself, I have heard that the current offerings from Utica are a good deal for the price.

Though I don't have one myself, the Queen Country Cousin fits the bill pretty well. You can find them with D2 steel and derlin handles well within your price range. My traditionals are all GEC, and if you are interested/able to spend a bit more, I highly recommend them. Have fun picking one out--even though I can carry a locking folder, I often find myself opting for a nice slip joint instead.

There are more and more non traditional non-locking knives on the market these days that offer modern conveniences like one hand opening and/or pocketclips. Spyderco offers UK Pen, Pingo, Squeak and Kiwi in that price range. Boker Plus offers a few, including a few non locking versions of popular locking pocket knives like the Subcom, Trance and Nano. Sanrenmu offers a handsome, inexpensive and well made gentleman folder in three different colors.

Check out the Case sodbuster Jr. or if you like a larger knife Case Sodbuster. AG Russell has some sweet looking knives based off the sodbuster called the Cowboy and the Rancher with a flat grind instead of the hollow grind that is on the Case. If you want to keep it more modern , like shecky said , the Boker nano comes in a slip joint and the Spyderco UKPK is a awesome little knife.

Can't thank you guys enough for the recommendations. In the future I'll try to keep my posts in the correct areas. Thanks again, have a good one.

You could also consider Miguel Nieto's Navaja (currenty my favourite EDC):

It's below your price limit (30-ish USD), carries extremely well and looks much smaller than it actually is, NKP friendly (untill you open it), you get three sizes to choose from (mine is middle, and it's heck of a knife with around 4" blade), and excellent F&F.

Navyblu, technically you didn't post in the wrong area since there are slip joints that aren't traditional. When you start getting into pocket clips, thumbstuds and opening holes then you've ventured away from traditional. I like both traditional and modern. The UKPK with the leaf blade is one I've been meaning to get myself.
