I posted this in the Maintenance, Tinkering and Embellishment forum but I thought I'd share this with you. I have this old Kingston slip joint I found at my great grandpa's house a few months back and I love the knife but the plastic scales really bothered me. So I decided to rescale it.....with leather.

Here it is with the scales popped off

Next are the peices of leather trimmed and dyed:

A little bit of sanding and shaping:

And here is where I'm at tonight. I redyed the leather and then saturated it with superglue for a hard finish. I've done a little sanding but I still need to do some more to smooth it all out. I'm hoping that it will have kind off a buffalo horn look to it

I'm hoping to finish this up tomorrow and share with yall

Very interested to see how this turns out. Thanks for sharing.

When I first read leather scales I thought of one really ugly knife, that last picture is quite nice, it looks like a really weathered wood, curious as to what the finished product will look like. You might be starting a trend mate! But seriously, cool scales, but I feel like it will only be able to serve as a display knife

Hey nice work. I rescaled a very old Case trapper that I received with old leather scales that were already falling off. I decided to use leather myself and fancy it up a bit.

I used a mint green thick leather. Dyed it with multiple colors, hardened it with super glue and shellac, and jigged it some with a dremel before redying certain parts. Pics aren't great but it came out alright and the leather is pinned in so it should work fine for a user.

Wow, finally found someone else who has tried it. That looks really sweet. The super glued definitely hardens then leather up pretty well. I'm going to work on it some more today on my lunch break. I'm excited about this project.

That's different, and looks good too. I am always amazed at people's ability to think outside the box and try non-standard cover materials.

Good job!

Here's an old Imperial Barlow that had hollow tin scales that I rehandled with 8 oz leather. Makes for a comfy handle.
Leather makes a great handle material for big choppers as it absorbs a lot of shock.

Regards

Robin

How did you attach them? (that's to everybody)

I've been threatening to rescale a shell Imperial or Colonial for a while.

Hi Dave
The imperial has a handy hole that you can pin right through the frame, It goes under the blade. I just epoxied the bolster end and pinned it at the back.

Best regards

Robin

The scale pins on the Case were still there sticking out though the old leather scales were coming off. I used the existing pins as guides and pushed the new leather onto them. Obviously there was no way to peen them, but they helped hold the leather in place for the DUCO cement to do its work. This is also one of the nice things about scaling with leather... its very flexible and forgiving until you harden it.

Well, I think this is about as finished as it's going to get. I put another coat of glue on it and then wet sanded with 220, 600 and 1500 grit sand paper. Then I went to the garage and hit it on the buffing wheel with some green compound and then some red rouge on a soft wheel. Finished up with some mothers mag and aluminum polish. I'm much happier now!
