I was wondering how most makers attach scales to slip joints. pins, epoxy, other style glues.

thanks

my grandads 4 blade Dunlap Cattleman last year the original scales had long since gassed out and disintegrated. I just filed down the center pin flush with the liners and then rough cut my scales then sand/file to fit then epoxy them in. If you just have to have pins it can be done but its a bit more involved and youll need more equipment. It turned out alright, i had fun doing the slippie not so much fun on the bowie, i'll do another slipjoint cant say i'm gonna try another fixed blade:)
good luck

nice job Ivan,
thanks, Rusty I figured most people would use some type of epoxy and pins, sounds like just pins works

Since I use stone for scales pins are out for me. I most frequently use Locktite 325. Keeping the surfaces really clean is important to get good adhesion but if done correctly, the scales will not come off unless you heat the knife to about 200 degrees and then if really lucky you may be able to get them off undamaged. If you really want them to stay on use Loctite 324.

I have never sucessfully removed a stone scale undamaged using loctite 324 even after boiling the knife in water for 30 minutes. See the picture of a "oops" knife I was trying to save as one side still had perfect stone. Note the stone SHREDDED and still the 324 held and the knife was so hot I had to use a towel to hold it.... I ended up CHISLING the stone slab off to save the knife.

Absolutley clean surfaces on the outside of the liners and bolster edge, quick
acetone wipe, super glue gel, and peened pins. As has been said just the pins
will work, or just the glue. To try and get glued scales (if done right) off liners
without destroying everything can be quite the project. The only way I've found
to do this is heat or an extended soak in acetone -- like days.

I have no issues with liners warping. The biggest issue I deal with is liners that are not flat from the factory. Plastic and wood pinned scales can flex a lot and polishing compound stuck at the ends hides a lot of poor fit..... I spend a lot of time working on my knives to improve on the factory fit and finish.
