A kit is a good way to start. You'll get all the parts you need and just have to assemble the knife. This gives you a good understanding of how a slip joint goes together. I made my first one from scratch and spend 40+ hours working on it and didn't get everything right and the spring is too weak so it sits on a shelf.
A number of suppliers offer slip joint kits. I believe Jantz and Knife kits both have some. If you want to start with kits try "knife kits" in your favorite search engine.
