Slip joints and Thumbstuds...

Hey guys... my first real foray into the area of slipjoints and modernization...

I've pretty much always carried a folding whittler, a SAK or a Boy Scout folder, so I'm comfortable with them and understand some of their limitaions.

And knowing some of those limitations, I've found those folders that incorporate the back-lock to be best - I think the Buck 110 illustrates this.

My issue with slipjoints, in general, is the ease of deployment and inherent accidental closure. Since a lot of people feel that way, in the last 30 years we have seen a plethora of mechanical answers to mating the benefits of a slip-joint with the benefits of easy deployment and a locking mechanism.

My question is: does anybody make a folding lock-back with a thumbstud?
And I don't mean just adding a disc to a Buck...

I like a lot of the recent works by the likes of Bill Ruple and the Boses, who render traditional patterns in modern materials... But does anybody like that make the same items only with an allowance for either a thumb-stud or a back-lock, or both?

Any help, including all sorts of comments, greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Bailey Bradshaw makes front-lock (aka mid-locks) folders that are specifically designed with a thumbstud. I know that W.D. Pease makes a few with studs that are in fact, back locks (like the Buck).

Get that checkbook/credit card ready for a really, really good workout though! :D

Thanks guys... I hadn't realized Bailey did that style... I'll look at his an see what's up... besides the price!!!

Don... the 960T on the Schrade link, if it had a thumbstud and one lock-back blade is what I'm really looking for... the other folders with the studs are more like Buck 110 derivatives...

I think a simple two blade trapper or a whittler/stockman style, with the main blade having both a stud and a lock, with a simple slipjoint auxilliary blade(s) is what I'm looking for... the 960T I mentioned had the added benefits of tweezers and pick - the two items I use my SAK for the most! LOL!!! It just didn't have the stud...

Well, at least now I know there are solutions...

Thanks guys

Whiskers Allen makes a nice lockback with a thumbstud. On the production side, I used to use a Blackjack folding Mamba. I might have a photo of both. When I find them I will post 'em here for ya.

CRKT's Cascade is a lockback witha thumbstud, too... but I thjink after all these years, I kinda want to try an old style pocket knife with a slightly newer look... Of course, most of my current EDC's are liner-locks, so it's not like I'm anti-new styles...

Just looking to see what might be out there...In fact, mckgreg, I just met Whiskers at the OKCA show in Eugene, Oregon... He's got a lot of nice work out on the 'net,too... I like his bolster release pieces a lot and may also end up ordering one of those... but...

I'll still keep my eyes out for a traditionally modern piece as a nice piece of "Pocket Jewelery for Men"!

AG Russell has the Strike Force, which IMO is the best Buck 110 style knife ever made. Thumb hole opener, VG-10 Interframe Micarta scales and a clip if you want it.

Also, the Spyderco Dyad, while not traditional it's got two blades, both are lock backs with the thumb hole. The Dyad Junior did not come with a clip on the FRN models.

Not sure if those are what you had in mind but what the heck.
