There doesn't seem to be much if any slip joint patterns on the web.

I would like to build my first one off a pattern that has been built before.
Than I can mod it to my ways once the first one is done.

I have a bunch of literature on them and how to build them, but really no designs.
Are they not as complicated as I'm making it?
Meaning the spring lock bar pivot point as crucial?

Most of what I see are sketches

Any tips or sites with a shadow pattern ?
Or I could get away with just drawing my own?

Thanks

You could always buy a "Kit" and reverse engineer any mods to your liking. I make them and believe me there are a number of crucial areas to consider not just the back spring. I purchased a junked out Case at the flea market and took it apart to start the rebuilding process as my first slipjoint like 15 years ago that's how I started.

Buy one of the waterjet cut kits from Usaknifemaker. There's still plenty of finish work, plus HT, but you can use it as a pattern for your next one.

I was going to suggest Junkers from flea markets/garage sales as well. Then you can manipulate the pattern in hand while constructing as well. They are much more complicated than they look, in hand is always preferable in my books!

RoughRider, cheap good patterns. Just cut them apart and use the pieces for a pattern.

I bought Weldon Whitley's slipjoint video and it came with schematics for making the knife that he builds in the video...if that is any help.

I've bought cheap slipjoints from ebay to pull them apart and get a rough idea on patterns. I'll even look for broken knives and knives that are broken at the tang, or sharpened to death, as you can still get the more crucial dimensions and kind of draw in your own pattern for the blade.

I've also inserted pictures into a CAD program and traced the outline, before dialing in the dimensions to make sure everything works.
