SlipJoint Question regarding Case knives.

Last year I bought a brand new Case Stag Trapper(#5254).

I was wondering if I should use it, or should I keep it as a collector piece? Do you think the Stag material makes this knife more likely to appreciate in value?

I was reading the slipjoint forum thread, and it sort of renewed my interest in these knives. I like the idea of carrying a pocket knife on occasion, and not being afraid of using it. It gives me a chance to use something more traditional with eye-appealing materials, like stag and bone. They are neat knives, handy knives.

Also, are these new Case blades nearly worthless, or are they decent users?

By all mean use it if you like komondor, Case still makes a good knife but IMO if your talking about collecting them as a investment the ones to go for are the pre 9 dot's ones from pre 1972. BTW stag is going up in value because of the ban so if you don't use it, it is the one to keep NIB for sure but i wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them to go up in value any time soon, too many of them made for one thing and the older ones are the way to go in that direction i believe.

I'm a small time Case collector (Eisenhower pattern) and I don't use the knives in my collection. However, I often carry stag handled, damascus bladed Case knives because I like them. I even have a stag trapper with stainless blades that I carry from time to time. I think you should collect knives because you like them, not because you think they will appreciate in value. If you like the stag trapper and want to use, then use it. Take care.

Hi Komondor,

I agree with everyone above, you probably are not going to see any huge price increase's :(:). As to Case's quality, They seem to be hit or miss most of the time.

I prefer to buy them from local dealers, so I can check out quite a few, and pick out the best fitted(this is where the newer ones suffer, IMHO). My favorite higher end Slip-joints are Eye Brand, or one of the Queen contract brands.

HTH:):D.
