Here are a few questions for makers with experience making slipjoint folders:

1. For a slipjoint with a 3-1/4" blade, what size of pin do you recommend for the pivot?

2. Since the pivot will be peened, I assume (if using 416 stainless) hardening it would not be recommended? Any issues with wear (if not heat treated)?

3. What stainless material would you recommend for the backspacer/ spring? Type 301/302/304 or 316?

4. Any advice on how to make the nail nick? -Dovetail cutter? End mill w/ sine plate (angle?)?

5. Are washers typically used on the blade tang in a slipjoint knife?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

1--3/32" 416
2--I don't
3--Use the same steel as blade and draw back to spring temper about Rc 46-49
4--I use a 1-3/8" Dovetail cutter
5--I relieve the liners,If useing washers, use a .005 on each side and make the blade .010 smaller than the spring.

I like to use 416 for the pin because it is soft enough to peen nicely. It blends good with a set of 410 bolsters. I like to use a bushing too that is only .001" thicker than the blade. I mill a relief on the liners that is .006" deep.

The blade and spring are the same steel but the spring is softened to spring temper like Stan says, 49 rc is a nice spring.
The pivot will indeed wear out if the spring is too big. A "Nail breaker" will wear out the pivot.

I use a knife edged stone on my surface grinder for the nail nick after heat treating. The same stone could be mandreled to work on a milling machine. Hope this helps. I do have a tutorial or two on my KD site that may be helpful.

Thank you Bruce. I appreciate your help.

1. For a slipjoint with a 3-1/4" blade, what size of pin do you recommend for the pivot? 1/8 inch

2. Since the pivot will be peened, I assume (if using 416 stainless) hardening it would not be recommended? Any issues with wear (if not heat treated)? all is ok

3. What stainless material would you recommend for the backspacer/ spring? Type 301/302/304 or 316? you do need a steel that will harden to spring temper, like other match with blade steel

4. Any advice on how to make the nail nick? -Dovetail cutter? End mill w/ sine plate (angle?)? I used a grinding wheel cleaning stone to put a bevel on a thick dremel cutting wheel, place in drill and mount blade and works really well, not as clean a the other methods described but will get you going

5. Are washers typically used on the blade tang in a slipjoint knife? I dont use any but relieve the inside, I use a marker to mark where the blade may rub and be exposed, mill away (or file and sand) just a little to provide a small gap between the line and the blade.
