I have a couple slipjooints, and i sometimes feel that they are "gritty" when opening, i look at the brass liners, and they look to be wearing down prematurely,

If there are steel lined slipjoints, would the liners last longer? are there any models that use steel liners?

If its gritty you can clean it out with oil and air. They do make steel liners. Canal Street make a stainless liner on some stuff, at least my half moon trapper is steel. Other than that, customs are usually stainless or old ones, steel.

Aaron, you need to oil your joints. I use mineral oil. Steel liners can be found on a lot of older slipjoints.

These days, steel liners are generally reserved for higher-dollar knives (customs, and a limited selection of production pieces - the Case/Bose series, for example, which is a couple steps up from Case's regular production in both quality and price).
As was also mentioned, many older knives used steel liners.

I agree that a little oil will go a long way in your case. I sincerely doubt that your experience with a gritty feeling is due to the liners wearing... That happens when you have bare metal-on-metal contact between the blade tang and the backspring. Put some light lube in there, and you'll be fine. You can even use pencil graphite, if you don't want to mess with liquid oils.
