Have you noticed that slipjoints just make great gifts? I have given away knives as gifts now, for what seems like forever. It might be an old Parker jack, a Buck 301, or an old Imperial stockman I found, with the thought that so and so would like this. I've given a few modern designs to family and friends, but you always see that sak, that stockman, that trapper etc. come out of their pocket, and get used. Seen a lot of them come back to me for a sharpening, and then back to work.

Just an observation. ;):D:cool:

You'll get no argument from me on that, especially when it comes to gifting them to those say 30 or above!

i haven't given one as a gift, but i did receive a very nice case stag peanut from my boss as an appreciation gift about a month ago and it really made me feel good, and i carry it quiet often when i change clothes after work and on the weekends when i won't destroy it with really heavy cutting tasks. my little brother is getting ready to graduate from college and i'll be getting him a nice slipjoint, as he loves anything with a blade, as a congratulations gift.

slipjoint folders are my favorite kind of knives, have been since i was little and what better gift to give than something that you would prefer for yourself.

thanks
sam

I really haven't noticed. Maybe you should send me one and I'll document my reaction to it so you'll have some hard evidence to back up this theory. :)

I agree. I just gave my mom's new bo a slip joint knife I made to welcome him to the family. They've been together for so long I'm way late on it but it was a great gift and he knows he is family now in my eyes.

Yes I agree. I have gave a lot of slipjoint knives as gifts, even go as far as buying them to have on hand when that unexpected need for a gift to give comes up. I really enjoy seeing them used by whom I have gifted it to and no issue if they bring it to me to sharpen because I will teach them the art. Another two birds with one stone use is I will order a new pattern thinking I will like and it just will not compete with my old stockman and it stays in the box for a future gift.

+1 also. People just seem to instantly warm up to them. Well maybe not instantly but they don't jump back when they first see one, as opposed to when they see a 'tactical'.

They certainly would, but never have bought one except SAK in keyring size. People just don't appreciate tools or self reliance these days, and they find putting it in and out of their pocket too much effort.

As unfortunate as that is, that's just how it is.

Me also, I agree 100% with you.
Any slippie, even a VIC Spartan, makes a great gift.
Just the week before I've gifted a Tidioute Wharnie with Bocote handles, not that big a 3" one, to a colleague that will be so far form house.
He dropped a small tear.
:D

I tend to give away quite a few that I test out. These are typically new patterns (to me) that I my decide later to pass on. I recently noticed that an Irish friend of mine never carried a knife and he bugged me all the time to use one. I gave him a Colt gunstock that he loves so much he put the box on display in his livingroom!

I get a great deal of pleasure from giving a knife to someone. My 3 adult children make an affectionate joke of how dad 's gift was always a knife.
I give knives to long time friends and to newer friends who seem like sincere honest people.
I needed help doing a 'deep' house cleaning last week and after paying the woman, i gave her a really nice new Rough Rider "Dress" knife, has a dark jade-like handle, N.I.B., because she really worked hard. She was very 'touched' by this acknowledgement of her effort.
I get the most delicious fresh cows' milk, and eggs, and tractor work from a kind and helpful neighbour, sometimes in trade for a knife, often a custom. I make sure the knife value well exceeds the cash that it is replacing.
Most people really do like getting a well made, sharp, knife, sometimes the first really sharp blade they have ever had. And knowing that i really like the knife i am giving them as well as sensing my obvious enthusiasm, i think adds to their enjoyment and appreciation.
But the main reason that i give knives as gifts is because i get great pleasure from sharing my enthusiasm for well made knives of all types. I do it for me.

A slip joint makes a nice gift, but ya gotta be careful of the kind of person you're gifting it too. Most non knife people will not appretiate a knife unless it is the most innocent of it's kind, the keychain sak. Most non knife people would like a small slippy. Eisenhower's, peanuts, tiny trtappers. But if it gets much bigger, they all ask the same question; "Who am I supposed to kill with this thing."

Unfortunately, people have lost touch with basic cutting tools. Most would rather have the latest cell phone out there.

I gave a RR Congress in Smooth Orange Bone to my best friend for birthday present. He was very pleased about it. Til that day he carried any tactical folder from Smith and Wesson.
But now, he carries this knife every day... I will give any slippies to my friends or family for present...

Kind regards...

Well Luciano,

that´s just the way I feel, when my best friend and I sit in a bar for a beer or two and he´s using that knife...

I love SAK's most likely since that was my first pocket knife giving to me by my Dad. I gave my Mom and Brother Vic Classics and my best bud a Vic Tinker. They went over perfectly and all three carry them daily. Made me feel very proud. :)

The knives or the latest cell phones? :D

I gave away 12 Vic Alox Classics to family members as gifts one year. I still see the worn red alox scales on some of their key chains which still makes me smile. :)

:D

Great gifts. I found a whole box full at a flea market a couple years ago, and gave them away. $1-$3 each, and all were in good or better condition.

Yup, a friend and neighbor who gave me SAK a few years ago changed me from an occasional knife user to carrying a knife daily. I will have that red SAK for the rest of my life.

They are awesome gifts. My dad gets one or two each year.

(P.S. they are also better cutters in general).
