...and so I did!! :D

First up...I dropped by the hardware store a couple miles from mi casa, looking to add another Case to the collection, and walked out with this...

A nice Amber Bone CV medium stockman...

Seeing as how my favorite EDC right now is my yeller CV pen knife, and there has been no question at all which one goes into the pocket everyday... now... there might be a dilemma (at least until my Peanuts get here). LOL!

Second, as usual, one is not enough...so off I head to the gun shop to see what they have along side the myriad of lock blades and what not. I browse the glass counter and see this!....

A Boker Trapper.

Now here is something that has me scratching my head.

I look up the model number on the box, which is 112525WBB... which shows to be a "Tree Brand" trapper wash board. However the blade, as clearly shown...shows "King Cutter." Now I'm not to concerned with the box as it's the knife inside that counts, but I would kind of like to know exactly what I have. Any ideas?

Anyway... another nice productive day in the life of a knife knut. LOL!!

I could be wrong, or not entirely right, but you have a Boker Tree brand King Cutter washboard trapper. The box is correct, the knife is good. You can see the tree brand tang stamp. It's a nice looking piece. The washboard scales have intrigued me, but I don't have one yet.

Ok, thanks! I didn't really want to think that it was mis-boxed, but after looking it up on google, the knife that came up didn't match what I have and it kinda got me to thinking.

It's a little bigger than what I am used to carrying in my front pocket (other than a large lock blade clip knife), but I can either carry it in a back pocket or maybe get a leather belt pouch for it.

My only complaint...it isn't sharp. I'm definitely going to have to break out the Dia-Sharp and work on it a little bit. It isn't what I would call dull, but the edge(s) are no where even close to hair popping sharp. It just needs a little TLC, and that's no problem at all.

Beautiful blades! That case stockman is sweet, one of my favorite patterns. I'm actually on a slippie craze right now too. I got a case Barlow and a custom swayback jack on the way and I just received a queen canoe.

Thanks!

I have been looking hard at Queen myself, as well as GEC. I will have at least one of each some time or another...it's just a matter of time. LOL

I actually prefer a new to me knife to be dull so that I can put "my" edge(s) on it.

Post an update about the ease of bringing that Boker up to speed edgewise. I have been eyeballing the whittler pattern and am curious about that aspect. I have heard that the solingen steel is relatively friendly when it comes to sharpening but don't have any personal experience other than a knife I had back in my teen years. I could get it pretty sharp but would like some confirmation that the steel quality hasn't declined since then.

Regards.

I worked on the clip point for a little while last night and it is better, but not where I want it to be. It looks like I'm going to have to break out the course rock and take off a little more steel and then hone it with the fine and extra fine Dia-Sharp. Hopefully that'll do the trick.

Hummm, not exactly the reassuring news I was hoping for.

I like older 1095 from Schrade Walden. I can get that to whittle hair with ease.

My second choice is 1095 from later Schrades followed by Case Cv.

How would you compare it to those? Sounds like it is a lot harder to "get there" with the Boker carbon steel.

I'm no expert knife sharpener by any means, and with that said, I'm a little disappointed.

I don't have an edge pro or any other kind of high end knife sharpening "system." I use a wet rock and then recently acquired the Dia-Sharp two sided stone. My Case CV pen knife went to the rock this morning and was razor sharp in about 10 minutes. The Boker...a whole 'nother story.

I worked on the blade for a good hour and a half last night and probably a good hour earlier today, and it STILL isnt anywhere near what I would call hair shaving sharp. It even fails the paper test, miserably. I finally said "screw this" and broke out the pen knife. Again, the pen knife was nasty sharp in around 10 minutes.

Obviously this blade steel is above my skill level.

I really like this knife, but if I can't get it sharp then it's useless to me and will probably end up tossed in a drawer.

Yeah right, a boring Sunday afternoon in Texas:rolleyes:
Most of the shops are closed over here on Sundays:grumpy:
You lucky...
Nah I'm not calling you names this time:D

All kidding aside, nice new toys you got there.

Sorry to hear about that Boker. Very frustrating.
I have 2 knives in my drawer I can't seem to put a decent edge on regardless.:(
G10 Peanut and Swayback gent. Both in TruSharp
All I have for sharpening are a Spyderco sharpmaker, Spyderco pocket stone and an old german made wet stone.
The buggers just won't get sharp.:grumpy:

I'll sharpen it for you! Fly me out to TX for the weekend? ;)

You may have already done this but it bears saying so anyway; Check the edge to ensure that there are no flat spots on it. I have had a few knives that had their kicks ground to far down, allowing the blade to come into contact with the backspring thus negating all of my sharpening efforts. I have a queen doctors knife that is about to go in for warranty work because of this.
Is that tree brand carbon or stainless? I actually really like bokers carbon. I have carbon blade Barlow that I absolutely love. It's very easy to get a fine edge on. I have no experience with their stainless though.
That Case is beautiful. I think I may have to pick one of those up. I have the same knife in the red pocket worn bone and it sees a ton of pocket time.

What...no name calling?? Now I don't have an excuse to send you a box full of deer ticks in retaliation, LOL!! :D

I haven't given up yet. It's to nice of a knife to just throw in the towel. I'll figure something out.

It isn't hot enough up there in Philly? This sure ain't Arizona...here, it's a wet heat!! LOL.

Thanks for the offer, but for the price of a plane ticket, I can just buy another knife...except this time, I won't be swooned by snazzy scales and a pretty blade. I'll make sure it's actually sharp next time.

I didnt notice any flat spots. The way I looked the knife over before I broke out the wet rock, I probably would've noticed.

Is it carbon or stainless?... I really don't know. It doesn't say anywhere on the blade and the only paperwork that came with it is a warranty card. I don't know what it is, but I never had this much trouble trying to get a sharp edge on a knife. My first thought was that the edge angle was to obtuse, so I tried sharpening it at less of an angle thinking that after I achieved this, I would hone it on the extra fine stone...well that didn't work. Then I tried just taking my time and working it through the course stone, then medium...fine...extra fine. That didn't work either.

Then in my frustration, as I mentioned earlier in the thread... I put it down and picked up my Case pen knife. In no time...I was shaving the hair off my arm with that little knife. Now I know there are differences in the blade steels and all that, but I didn't do anything different in the way I was sharpening. Same technique... but night and day results.

I'm not giving up. I'm just going to have to figure something else out.

Thanks...that Case stockman is a sweet knife. I really have a thing for Case right now.
That yeller pen knife has been in my pocket everyday since the day I bought it, and I'm having a hard time trying to make the decision if I want to carry the stockman or keep bringing my loyal little yeller friend with me everyday. I have a yeller Peanut coming in a few days and then I'm REALLY gonna be in a fix. LOL

I'll just have to swap them out for pocket time every other day...or week. That seems to be the logical answer. Geez... what a dilemma.

Another day in the life of a knife knut.
