Sliverax: why mine is being returned

I'm a huge fan of Spyderco, and have several in my active rotation. I've been looking forward to the Sliverax for a long time, as the design seemed to hit all the right buttons for me.

In hand, the knife has many things I like:
  • the blade shape
  • the blade grind
  • the finger guard formed by the choil and the flipper tab
  • the texture of the handle scales
  • the light weight
  • the slim handle thickness
Alas, the knife has too many things I don't like:
  • Deployment using the flipper tab is OK, but not great. I own several less expensive folders which have better action.

  • Deployment using the SpyderHole is fast and easy, but occasionally causes the flesh of my index finger to get pinched in the compression lock mechanism.

  • Releasing the compression lock is unpleasant. It requires more force to release than my other Spyderco compression locks, and it sticks and squeaks when being released.

  • I find the grip less than comfortable. The end of the wire pocket clip digs into my palm.
While I'm disappointed that this knife is not for me, I'm sure there are other Spydies in my future.

I haven't paid much attention to this knife though I have the Ouroboros.
So forgive me for not knowing this but : I assume it has washers and not bearings in the pivot ? If washers are they teflon or metal ? I have tuned and lubed and practiced with my Ouro and the pivot is just noticeably less enthusiastic compared to my other similar knives. It's a keeper over all though.

My next Spyderco will be another Para 2 or a Pattada

Hey thanks for the insight / review.

It has bearings. And I find them to be strange.

Thanks Joq21,
Ah, well . . . maybe he can make some adjustments to the bearing and maybe to the detent ball tension . . . a little light slicky, maybe some solvent then some even lighter slicky.

Probably make 'er work.

I was looking forward to this model but several negative reviews and opinions (that make sense when you look at the design) have made me hold off on purchasing :( It seems like it needs some tweaking to fix some issues.

This is one that I'm torn on. There's a lot I really like about the design, but reports of mediocre flipping action and the lack of a free falling close make me a lot less enthusiastic. I know those aren't wildly essential features, but it a part of what put it on my list was the fun/fidget factor and if that's compromised somewhat I find it less compelling.

Maybe the second run will have better action.

Nothing is going to be perfect for everyone, but this blade is beyond cool and one hell of a cutter. All of the "issues" that have been identified here and in other threads are total non-issues for me, but the action should improve over time anyway (see Evil D's recent posts and macro shots in the Spyderco factory forum thread).

To each his own I guess, but I'm definitely keeping mine. Maybe I should start a thread about it? Lol.

Do it! Personally, I'm looking for feedback (or an excuse to buy a damn cool knife ;)), so I'd love to hear from folks that dig it.

There should be plenty to come, it's only been out a week.

I've been high on this thing since the first pics were released though, so I want to let it cool for a couple weeks and see (though I expect to like it just as much :D).

Measured in a straight line, the cutting edge is longer than the blade length?!?!:eek:

I Like mine, I have zero complaints. Does it flip like a ZT? Nope, but mine flips just fine with decent detent. I don't notice any pinching issues so far. Although I haven't played with it a whole lot.

I'm sure it'll die off and disappear any day now.

yeah...I wished lol. I've refrained from purchasing some nice models because of the bearing systems. When they go out of wack, gritty and gunky, its always more trouble then some thick phosphorus bronze washers....when these get broken in, its just as smooth if not more then bearings....

Meh. I've never heard of anyone having a real problem with bearings. Just hypothetical ones made up on forums.

I got rid of my Domino because of the crappy action mine had.....its sad, cause the knife was awesome aside that....if only it had simple quality washers.....

Bearings that are well executed are great in a folding knife. Same with bronze washers. It's really that simple.

I have three bearing system knives, the Eros, the TiLock and Zieba S1-mini. No problems with any of them. The cheapest, the Eros, is at least 5yo by now. Both the Eros and TiLock won Blade awards when they came out. I don't baby them, and use them in food preparation. Rinse out with water, sometimes soap and water, rarely WD40. I think bearings are great. If you are OCD about a centered blade, bearings help keep it that way.

Per phosphorous washers, Bob Terzuola, who wrote the book on Tactical Knives, doesn't use them. Back when I bought my ACTF from him (~2010) he said the lubrication needed for them picks up dirt and is a hardship, particularly in dirty sandy environments. At that time he used Nylatron washers instead; per Bob it's a lube-less system.

my ZT 801 is rolling frictionless, but so does my griptilian and my enduras lol....WASHERS FOR THE WIN GUYS :D

''why make simple.....why?!?''

Kinda like, 'Why should I even use capital letters except for ALL AT ONCE IN A BIG LONG LINE?'
