I used the search function about slotting guards and didn't see this way mentioned. I need to put a guard on a knife. It's 3/16" thick steel. What I did was take brass bar and cut the size I needed for the guard. I tried to center the slot the best I could. I figured if it was off, I could grind it even. I clamped the brass in the drill press vise. Using a 3/16" drill bit, I drilled a 1 1/2" deep hole. Then I used a bastard file to square and widen the slot. It took about a 1/2 hour to fit it up to the knife. I'll post pics of the knife when it's finished. Here are 2 pics of what I did.
