anyone know of a good place to purchase a 1750 rpm wheel grinder? i want a slow one to sharpen my dull knives i hate the high speed ones because they are more prone to burning up the blade. any suggestions? thanks

I suggest you buy a belt grinder and not a wheel grinder for sharpening blades. You can slip and screw up a nice hand rubbed finish in a heartbeat with a wheel. Just a $100 belt grinder will do a very nice job sharpening.

One of the best slow speed wheel-based sharpeners is called a Tormek. You can check them out at Lee valley Tools. Expensive.

I'd consider Bruce's recommendation of a small belt grinder like a 1x42. Restore an edge with 220 and 400 grit belts then switch to leather belts loaded with buffing compound.

I prefer the belt grinder/sander for knife blades, but a wheel grinder does have its place in the shop. I prefer it for things like drill bits, and it can be handy for axes and things like that too.
I have one of these from woodcraft:

Its a very smooth running machine, and 1725 rpm is just about perfect. It also has good wheels on it right out of the box. If you look around a little bit I think you'll find that decent wheels cost as much or more than the grinder itself, so you'll want to keep that in mind when you buy something.
