slowing down my buffer

I have a grizzly 8 inch 3450 rpm buffer. I know it's too fast, but it was purchased before I knew any better. I have two issues with it, I'm not sure I'm getting the best finish possible (too fast maybe?) and it's darn dangerous. Any suggestions or should I avoid it and hand finish?

smaller wheels on same thing will make it go faster. sounds like you ahve same grinder/buffer sas me, or at least same motor. I use a 4" slow down wheel to cut grinder speed in half, and buying some 4" wheels for the buffer side too

Buffer RPM is only part of the successful buffing formula.

Steel polishes best when the surface speed of the buff is at least 5000 Surface feet per minute.

Surface feet are calculalted by taking the circumference of the buff in feet and multiplying it by the buffer RPM.

A 3450 RPM buffer with a 6" diameter wheel will give you the proper speed to buff with.

Great not very often mentioned tip George. I had forgotten that there was a rate best and thank you for posting it. This time I will try to remember.

Learn something every day. I love this site. :) Need to order myself some new wheels and compound sometime.

Thanks for the tips. I'll order some new wheels. Does everyone use sisal wheels or something else preferred? I've searched the threads on buffing compounds. It sounds like most use a green. If I understand correctly the black cuts the quickest and the green maybe a good all arounder. What about for the final polish...white or something else?
Thanks to everyone for all the help and info.Merry Christmas!!!

I use a fast buffer and it works fine.......

one thing that is wrong in the top.........the BIGGER the wheel the faster the feet per minute (the outside rim goes faster as it gets bigger and slower as it gets smaller), the rpm is always the same.

dont buy black buff, just get the green stuff and get close sewn muslin wheels.

You'all probably already know this, but concerning the safety factor, ALWAYS keep whatever it is you are buffing "Below The Equator".........that is, on the bottom half of the wheel. That way, if it snatches it out of your hand, it won't come straight at your gut (or worse:eek: ).
