Slym

I'm curious as well. I like the design but the blade seems quite thick - I have the same gripe with the BM 940, so thick BTE.
3.4 mm at the spine too .
3 mm is plenty (I''d me happiest at about 2mm but that's me ; haven't broken a blade yet) .

You haven't lived until you use one reground thinner (spine and that funny point and behind the edge ) . I did that to my Green one .
I have a pile of them including S90V / Carbon fiber handle but the overly robust blade keeps me from carrying them more .
I don't need to take out a knight in armor then dig my way through a cinder block wall ; just the normal City Slicker stuff .
Over all a truly great knife though .

PS: I keep telling myself that my Spyderco C171TIBLP Mike Draper Titanium with the blue spyder web is about the same and for me I think I like it better .
That is until I start seeing too many of them here in the forum and get the Spyder bite.

I bet the slym will get put on clearance at some point. Seems like nobody has one.

They do look really nice. Ide like to handle one

Anyone bought one and used it yet? How are they?
I have been carrying one for two weeks now.
I mistakenly thought it was going to be too much like the Mike Draper I mentioned above . (I like the Draper but I have one if you see what I mean)
and
I decided not to buy it because the area on top of the handle behind the pivot seemed to have too much metal relieved from the "scales" / handle to the point it would be uncomfortable to push on it hard with my thumb there.
My inner knife nerd kept nagging me though.

I found myself trying to talk my self INTO buying the Bodacious and
trying to talk my self OUT OF buying the Slym .

There is a clue there . . . right ?

Finally when InnerKnifeNerd said : " This could be your Christmas present to yourself ." "Right ?" "I mean is there any other knife you've seen you want more ?"
(my answer was nope there isn't)
(I often buy my Christmas knife when I lay eyes on it in case there are shortages later . My Benchmade Bailout in M4 steel and Crater Blue anodized handle was last year's Christmas knife I bought in like , July )

So that did it . Whammo . Ordered it .

Bottom line first I love it !

The relieved area is still just fine to push down on hard so I was wrong about that . I love it when I am wrong .
Very high quality fit , finish , action ; zero problems out of the box ; could not be nicer ! ! !
I'm leary of frame locks because they poke my index finger in use ; this Slym frame lock is designed particularly well ; the lock is well forward of where I grip it and the corners of the lock are very well beveled and finished . SO NICE . As I said in a review : this knife has the fit and finish of an expensive knife that great care has gone into .

Sure I could enjoy a thinner blade . Might still , someday , thin it .

Unlike MANY other knives that I head to the belt grinder with the day I get it this Slym is being carried and enjoyed factory stock .
Pretty danged great as is .

I see Denver Knife Guy has one , so I'm not alone .

It is smaller than I imagined (and the handle is A LOT SHORTER than the Draper for nearly the same blade length) .
Size wise it is right in my sweet spot between my beloved Case Full Size Trappers and my 110s that I like so much .
Has the finger guard of the 112 so that I like a lot .

Very happy .
Worth the money.
No regrets .

OK bear with me , those of stout heart.
At first I was just going to cut and paste my review of this knife here and be done with it . For one reason and another with the halffast way I am posting these days BladeForums would not take the cut and paste from the word processor I am using so I typed the previous post above.

Now I have found a work around so here it is in all it's wall of text glory .
Maybe you can pick through it's giblet like mass and find something you can use . (if not I fully understand) .

REVIEW BEGINS :
Finally
I gave into my inner knife nerd and ordered this Spyderco Slym .
I have to say , InnerNerd , that was a smart move !

In the beginning I told myself that I have enough knives that are "like" the Slym such as my Spyderco C171TIBLP Mike Draper Blue (spyderweb) Titanium knife .
and such as
My Cold Steel Ti Lite four inch (in fact I have three of those that I have modded one way or another ) and I like them a lot.
and such as
my plethora of Buck 110s and 112s (which have similar "boxy" handle configurations )( boxy is my preferred handle compared to flat and wide slabs or round and slick ; think round and slick like Buck fixed blade handles ; that I can do without).
and such as
my beloved Case Trapper knives ; which are perfection in hand / in use .

So, what do I need this Slym for ? ? ?
Once I got one I found out . Big Time :
The handle is like the 110 but slimmer ; fits my hand even better .
Has the nice finger guard of the 112 with a blade length approaching that of the 110.
Better blade alloy than any of the above .

I'm not a fan of hollow ground blades like the Bucks or thick saber grind designed for poking people with like the Ti Lites . I want a full flat ground blade which this Spyderco Slym has .

I have no use , in a day to day work knife , for a wide blade like so many recent knives have and prefer the more slender blade of the Case Trapper or the Ti Lite , which this Slym has . A very useful blade shape in deed !

I don't like sharp / unfinished places on the knife such as sharp edges on the handle liners or overly aggressive (sharp edged) jimpping on the blade or handle and this Slym is very nicely finished and feels great in the hand . It feels like an expensive , high end knife that great care has gone into .

I don't generally go in for frame locks though I do like "integral" (one piece )handles . The lock on this integral frame is very well designed and does not lack in area on the under side for my index finger (which I find is lacking in most frame locks) . The lock is well placed and well finished so it does not poke my finger in use .

I'm telling you . . . this is the good stuff !

The clip is not too tight and is long enough and resilient enough to adapt to various pocket thicknesses without forcing it . A magnet sticks to the pocket clip so it is steel and not titanium .

If I had to nit pick I would like a thinner blade (this is one of the mods I did to the Ti Lites ; I ground the blades to less than 2mm at the spine )and I may , in time thin this one.
An overly thick / Butch looking blade seems to be the scourge of the high end man jewelry knife ( I'm sure women know better ) but guys are still buying Rambo wanna be stuff .

Oh well . . . it still cuts most things well . . . easily cut in half a bunch of grapes for my breakfast but cutting up a thick multi wall corrugated box or thick hard leather , or even an apple and one will want the thinner blade .

Over all this is a stellar knife and I am sooooo happy I bought it .
It is not overly large though the photo may make it seem like it is on the long side .

Opening with the Spyder hole is easiest if one places one's thumb nail in the hole on one side and one's nail on the index finger on the other side to start the opening to get past the detent then flip the knife open with just the thumb ; this kind of bypasses the tension from the detent on the lock bar . Just opening with the thumb makes one grip it with finger tips on the lock bar and that increases preasure on the detent and it is hard to open the knife using the Spyder hole.

The flipper works very well and with a tiny bit of practice and observation it is effortless.
I could gush on about details I like but I'll leave some for you to discover for your self.
No regrets .
Worth the money.

PS: good and sharp , zero play in the pivot or the lock up , no problems of any kind out of the box. Spine of blade highly rounded over (you won't be striking ferro sparks with this one ); which is fine with me / I like it .
