Hey all. Just got my 3rd small 31 in MC. I really like it. But if it didn’t say Magnacut then I would be able to tell a difference visually. Ha!

One thing that caught my eye is that the clip screw seems to go past the inside of the scale and is near the blade. It looks to clear the blade but gets pretty close when opening and closing the blade. Again still looks to clear the screw. So I pulled out my other 2 small 31s and a large 31 and
Umnumzaan. All the other clip screws seem to be flush on the inside of the scales and not protruding past the scale near the blade like this one.

What are your small 31 clip screws looking like? I asked CRK in an email so we’ll see. Maybe out of spec? I know it’s minor but my other $425+ CRKs have been basically spot on.

Best pic I could get of it.

Thanks all!

They use the same screw for the large and small and the Large has thicker scales. My small also has the screw portruding passed the scale like in your picture.

My 31 small also has a slightly longer screw protrusion as well.

My Sm 31 is like this too. Having seen this topic come up before, I just assumed it's how they were.. It's the only real nit I can pick at on my Sm 31. I kind of get why they do it though, it makes preactical sense to maintain uniform hardware across a product line.. and I see no real danger of the screw contacting the blade.. it's not my preference, but I can live with it. Interested to see CRK's official response on the matter..

Sounds about right haha.. I'm still assuming it's just because it's easier for them to keep the hardware the same across the line. Makes sense. I have mixed feelings on whether or not it's a cut corner. Every other design aspect of a CRK seems so intentional that it makes this feel just the littlest bit sloppy to me. I suppose it would be easy enough to file/sand down the screw to fit, if it really bothered me that much. But should I have to? And do I care enough to bother? hahah idk.. I guess, final answer, if CRK says that's the way they are supposed to be, that's good enough for me..

Anyways... doesn't take much to get me rambling sometimes, haha sorry. I appreciate you sharing their response!

Absolutely! I feel the same way. Make it flush for Pete’s sake! But I know it’s a non seen area and works fine without a different screw. I’m going to flatten it out and shorten it with some sandpaper for my own mental OCD on it. Otherwise. Great knife.

Definitely seems like a cut corner. When you have built your company on tight tolerances and continue to market it the same, this seems to be out of spec IMHO.

I don’t feel strongly about it. The precision and tight tolerances all seem to serve a purpose and impact the function of the knife. This one doesn’t. I agree it would be cleaner if it the screw was flush inside but it doesn’t bother me.

To be clear, this screw protrudes on older models too. It’s not a 31 thing.

Update: I took the clip screw and sanded it down a little bit on some 220 grit sandpaper. I then finished with some 800 grit sandpaper to smooth everything out. I didn’t want it sitting perfectly flush with the scale, so it protrudes out just a hair. I wanted to make sure I had enough threads for it to bite onto. Much happier with it. I don’t mind tinkering with stuff like this. It’s kind of fun. AnyWho, case closed. 😎

Nice! There is a certain pleasure in making it your own.
