This is a small bushcraft knife I've been making in my spare time, it was made from a old Nicholson file (1095 as far as I can tell) that cracked in half at work...I annealed it and went to work as the images show:
surface ground it flat before milling the angles
right after initial harden, I drew the hardness back in the oven and it takes an aggressive edge...my quench medium is a water based lathe coolant, used it previously with success so have continued to do so
after a etch in warm vinegar
before I had glued the handle
Glued handle in position before drilling.
some file work
leather is fully sealed, will take a couple days to cure to the point I want it.
I will definitely be using this one in the field, feels great in the hand and the large cutout is the diameter of most firesteels so you dont need to use the edge for striking.
