You guys have been really awesome with answering ALL my questions and I've really learned a lot. Just to let you know, I really appreciate it!

On to another stupid and detail oriented question on the "Special" 119. On looking closer at it, I noticed that the material that makes up the "little black line spacer" thingees is different from the black handle. It seems to have little specs or something in it...kinda looks like a wood texture.

Just out of curiosity...what is this material? Why is it there or is it purely cosmetic? And if it performs a function, why the different material?

GREAT KNIFE BY THE WAY! Very very pleased with it.

messersmith knows his stuff, the trim is micarta and the handles are a thermo set phenolic, I know i built about a million of those things. The trim is cosmetic and it doesn't do much else.

Issued by King John of England in 1215, the Micarta was an historic document that protected certain rights and liberties of the King's subjects and also mandated that the laws of the land could be applied to the king.....in other words, the king was not above the law.

It was a significant step forward in the evolution of the Western form of democracy that we all now hold so dear.

LOL.

Mia Carta is related to some of our other Buck sisters...Pearl Mica, Rosie Dorado, Gretsnap, Cherry Liner, and Jean Carta.

It is layered fabric impregnated with resin:

Here is a knife where Musky made some JeanCarta:

Hmmmm......Mia Carta......didn't she marry Billy Carta, the President's famous brother?

:D

micarta is A composite of linen or paper fabric in a thermosetting plastic, and its woven so its pretty strong.

cool, thanks guys. Why is this used as opposed to the phenolic they have on the handle? Is it just cosmetic or does it have any vibration dampening properties?

It is stronger, and it will bend before it breaks. If you take a hammer  to the phenolic handle it will pretty much shatter. It is more or less just cosmetic

In case anyone was wondering, we used to use "bone hard fiber" for spacer material on the 119 and others like it. It is a gasket meterial I was told. We used it from about 1962-ish to late 1969. Then we changed it to the red micarta. The reason for the change was because we wanted to try to tumble finish the knife whole, fully assembled. That hard fiber stuff absorbed moister so it had to go since our tumbling process involves water. Red micarta was the logical choice at the time.
We dont tumble the knive whole like we thought we were gonna but we kept using the micarta.
Now that I think about it, we do get some of those oldies in warranty where the guard is corroded. I wonder if it was because the fiber soaked up some moisture while in use? It is a somewhat rare defect but it has me wondering.

Here's some quick pics of some strips of the red micarta, that was used after the bone hard fiber, and the black micarta used on newer knives, for the spacer material at the finger guards & pommels on Buck's 100 Series knives.

purdy kewl.

So is there any structural reason you guys put this there? What function does it serve?

Sorry for my ignorance :)
