I already own several CRK one piece knives and I love them, But I should be going on a survival week and I need a utility piece. However I don't want another CRK as the handles can be a bit uncomfortable. The type I want is:
Spear point blade (very similar to the shadow's) about 4in long, at least 3/16in thick, the back of the blade will be used for stricking a fire lighting stick. Handle preferbly made from micarta with only a small guard and no deep finger grooves. It will be used mainly for wood craft type stuff. So my question is this: If you had to get one roughly the same what would it be?
The reason I'm asking this here is we all know the quality of Chris's work and I need somthing similar.
Price: anything up to say $300.00
Thank you:)

I can't emagine going without my CRK.I have a Mtnr II and wouldn't dare leave it at home.I have heard of some people using shrink tubing on the handle to add comfort. As far as another knife goes,Ease over to the wilderness-survival forum and you'll get loads of great advice.Hope this helps.

I have never tried this...(since I have calloused enough hands not to be bothered by the grip on my P-II), but "painting" the grip with plasti-dip may work...

one more thing, you may want to stick with high-carbon steels - and probably non-stainless steels at thst - if you want to use your blade as a striker...

SMAT, since you already have the best but don't feel comfortable with the grips (yet :) ) why not try something simple and easily available from the UK -- Scandinavian knives? I could give you Ragweed Forge over here, but you should be able to deal more directly with the Swedish or Norwegian or Finnish knifemakers. They have inexpensive, traditional, wood or composite handles, stainless or high carbon steel. They are experts for a thousand years in making knives for woodcraft and camping. Check out the manufacturers in Finland for a puukko, or a puukko and leuku combination. These knives are designed by years of experience for outdoors.

I also really appreciate Chris Reeve's knives. I am a fan of the One Piece Range and own several. If I were not to take a CR knife, I would look at Busse and for what you described, a Badger Attack generation 3 may be the ticket. If you would want a longer blade, then the Satin Jack is one of my very favorites.

If you are already happy with the CR One piece knives, you may wish to coat or cover the handle and stick with what you already have. If you have the itch to pick up anither knife however, the Busse knives are tough buggers.

Okay you've convinced me! I'll stay faithfull to CRK and go for a small shadow.:D :D and maybe a Busse as well, and possibly a custom strider thrown in for good measure. Well I'm not eating for a year!:D
