I'm looking for a smallish custom Bowie- call it 7-9", with a stabilized wood handle, fairly generous guard, in 1084 or 1095 with a differential temper. I want it for a user, so I don't want to spend more than possibly a couple hundred... anyone point me out a custom maker who could do it or offers something similar?

You are going to have to check on pricing, but I would recommend you contact:

Matt Lamey - www.imageseek.com/lamey

Matt Roberts (forum name, LongRifle)

I'm thinking that $200.00 is a little low, but it doesn't hurt to check it out.

Hmm... actually, for something my size, $200 is right on the money, lol. Thanks Keith...

your ceiling is a little low for what you want.

A stock removal guy, just starting out MAY be able to make you what you want for $200.00+.

A forger who can do a differential heat treat properly is going to start you out solidly around $350.00, and that is a maybe.

Good luck.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

LOL, well, I found it. The differential temper, you're right, but I can afford to skip that. I'm also taking a serious look at canvas micarta instead of wood. I was attracted to the looks of several woods, but I realize how much they add to the price, and that for something that I'm simply going to strap to my LBE...

EDIT: Matt Lamey can actually do pretty much what I want for $200. :D... only wanting a four inch blade can do that. :D

Thanks for the mention Keith.

I'm pretty cheap ;), but not quite that cheap. I'd suggest watching the "For Sale by Maker" forum.

There are some great buys there, but at $200 you're a little low for a 7-9" bowie. You could find someone to make a 5" blade for $200 without a problem. Steven is right on the money for what you're looking for, maybe a little less :).

I remember Mitch Wilkins had a fantastic 8" bowie for a great price last month, send him an email and see what he says. Start a post in the "Maker's" forum and see if anyone will take your bid.

You might want to consider a stock removal maker, they'll be able to make something a little cheaper. Tom Krein makes something along your specs for ~$300.

Good luck, let us know who you find.

Matt

Hey wait, is everyone thinking I want a 7-9" BLADE? Oh no, I'm talking about OVERALL!

Maybe that's why everyone thinks my ceiling is too low!

If it's 7 - 9" overall, it's not a bowie. It's your initial description that was misleading.

In that case I would recommend one of Burt Foster's Blue Collar knives.

Forged carbon steel by a mastersmith with stabilized wood scales for under $200. Follow this link for more information.

These Blue Collar knives don't come with a guard, but I'm confident that Burt, being the custom maker he is, would be willing to work with you on design modifications.

LOL, I didn't know that. Perhaps Bowie-style would have been more accurate. Please forgive my ignorance. :o

EDIT: Thanks Wulf. :D

Out of my custom "personal" sized bowies I have, the two I use the most are Matt Lamey's "urban bowie" and Craig Camerer's "EDC". Both are great knives and should be in the neighborhood of your price range... maybe a little more.
I'd give Kenny Rowe a call and have him make a boot-clip sheath for you, and you will be good to go.

Hmm... the Camerer EDC looks like almost exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Mongo!

Madcap, the "EDC" pictured on Craig's website is mine! (So is the bird and trout, and the elk stubby). You won't be disappointed with Craig's work.

Here is another vote of confidence in Craigs work!! Very clean work! Plus Craig is a good guy!
