Small Damascus-Micarta Lock Bar Engages Early

Well, I would like to thank you all for steering me towards the Sebenza, though my wife is far less happy with you. It took a while, and, with the sale early this year at a popular site, I picked up a Small Sebenza Micarta with Basketweave Damascus. I ordered it in January and I had to wait until I was stateside in July to use her.

It is awesome. Without a doubt a great knife. I picked up a Natve5 G10 at the same time, and, really too bad that I did because I doubt it will see any pocket time. I use this Seb, Squigs I call her, whenever I can. Just awesome. The only problem is that I cannot imagine buying another, though a small tanto micarta is on my wish list...this knife just feels so good, and I just want to use it and no other.

I do have a question though. As I open the knife, the lock bar begins to engage early before fully open. It feels like a "click" almost. I read in the paper work that this "washboard" effect is the nature of damascus. I just wanted to confirm that this is what I am experiencing. Any and all help would be most welcome.

Thank you again...

It's normal, and your action will smooth out over time and through use. Enjoy the knife, you picked an excellent one! Easily one of my favorites. Welcome!

That is one sweet knife.

^^Absolutely! I said "whoa" out loud when I saw it.
I think what you're experiencing is the detent ball passing the edge of the blade just before the actual lock bar engages, if that makes sense.
Look closely at the same angle as your middle pic as you slowly open it and you'll see what I mean. It's perfectly normal.

You are just noticing the moment the detent slips off the blade and the lockbar makes contact with the flat of the blade before moving totally off the flats and locking up by engaging the tang. It's totally normal and if you open the knife a bit quicker you will not notice it at all....Congrats on the nice knife, too. :)

Many thanks to the four of you for your replies and help. I feel very lucky to have it, and it is a privelage to use it. I am afraid that my knife hunting days are at an end with this one...though, Alan Davis makes some beautiful knives...

Thank you again, and my apologies if this had been discussed before...I did search, honest...

Beautiful knife. If you really need to put your mind at ease, you could send it to me to inspect for defect, shouldn't take but a year or two to check out. ;)
