What would you recommend for an EDC fixed blade? I would like to carry it on my belt or as a neck knife. It will mainly be used for utility, (misc. cutting, rope, opening boxes). I would like to be able to depend on it if a self-defense situation was to arise. Thank you.

The Spyderco Moran is a good choice, the sheath can be worn on a belt horizontal or vertical with the TEK-LOK attachment, or you can take it off to wear as a neck knife.

If you wanted to spend a little more, I recommend the Pikuni crafted by Rob Simonich. I often carry a Pikuni II. Another little blade I like to carry is the La Griffe production model by Emerson Knives. Not too good at cutting rope, but great for zipping open boxes and the like, and a formidable self-defense blade if the need arise. There's a bunch of good blades out there for you to choose from....

Bob Dozier knives are great too. I just acquired one ('Agent') from a recent trade, and I love it. Very comfy in hand, D2 blade, great sheath, perfect fit & finish, perfect blade thickness, what more can I ask ??

I carry it around every day, even when I sleep (Am I nuts or what ?). It has a very secure sheath.

Two that come to mind are the Camillus Cuda CQB-2 and the REKAT Hobbit Fang. I use my Fang as my "house knife", and it does all kinds of cutting chores very well.

Check out the Dozier Personal Utility or Straight Personal. Great little knife that is small and easy to carry, though cuts like a much larger knife. It also comes with a great kydex sheath. Bob's knives are oustanding cutters at a price that most people can actually afford. Great buy in a user custom/handmade.

Any of the small Polkowskis if the budget allows although they are priced very reasonably for what you get.

You may want to try a Busse Assualt Shaker. It is a really tough little knife. I also purchased a BuyBrown Kydex sheath, for belt and neck carry. I use it for just about everything that needs to be cut or pried. Excellent warranty, not that it matters you couldn't break it if you had too. If you have some knife training it is a good self-defense knife, and very sheeple friendly. Then again, out here in the Old West its a bit of a sissy knife :D :D :D

Darkjedi - May the Force be with you always.

Another vote for the Dozier! Top notch knives, awesome sheaths, great prices, great customer service. You can't ask for more.

If you want to spend les money than a Dozier, you're going to have to go with mass production, brand names. My favorite would be the Fallkniven WM-1. A great, stout, sharp little knife. several sheath options as well. Or get Bob Dozier to build one for it!

Hope this helps
Jim

I used to own an Assault Shaker, but the edge profile makes it very hard to sharpen. It is very suitable for combat situation, but for me, it's just not my EDC due to the edge profile, not to mention the excessive thickness.

Anyway, it's just for me. I don't know about anybody else.

I carry a Helle Nying as my every day carry fixed blade. I wear it on my left side and most people don't even comment on it. The only remarks I've received on it is how nice it looks.

nothing comes close to my camillus mini talon. 2.25" talonite scary sharp blade, great kydex sheath with tek lock provisions, and a SUPER comfortable handle. by far my favorite fixed blade. you MUST look at one!! you will not be dissapointed. Simonich design, need i say more? (ok, i will, Talonite!).

The CRKT Polkowski-Kasper Companion is what I use for EDC. Very nice and slim and good 4 inch blade. Best bang for your buck if you don't want to spend zillions. Great fixed blade for general utility work and I use it extensively around the kitchen. Sharpens well and of course, should the need arise, heaven forbid,........well...it is a fighting knife also :D

If there are still some around, check out Rob Simonich's Mid-Tech Crowfoots! I just picked up a custom version recently and I can't say enough about it. I've been on a non-stop search for a lightweight FB for a while -- and bought a few very nice ones -- but this one takes the cake. It's comfortable in the hand, versatile, and extremely thin and light.

For 129 bucks, you get an S30V blade with a comfortable handle finished by Rob himself. How cool is that? The attention to detail is really something you have to see to believe...

Katherine Tomey makes some nice knives in your size range. The nice thing about her knives are the extras such as filework, mosaic pins, etc. I have a Day Hiker (2.5"-3" blade, 6.5"-7" overall) that is almost small enough for EDC. She has two others that would fit the bill. If I didn't work in an office, the DH would be my EDC. She offers O1 and ATS-34 for the steels. You can get almost any handle material. I chose Thuya Burl.

Think about the Fällkniven WM 1. You can carry it around the neck or you drill two extra holes in the kydex-sheat and mount a small tek-lok for belt carry. Works great for me. I carry it most of the time in my front right pocket, but this is another story...:D

Doziers are always a safe bet, but I recently picked up this Small Scott Cook fixed blade, blade is only 3" and handle is about 4" so it's a fairly small knife but rugged and will serve you very well! The grip is excellent as Scott has the handle contoured with a palm swell so the grip just fits snug in your hand, very secure.
