Small EDC multi-purpose for dad

Hi

Dad lost his SAK a couple of months ago and has missed it ever since. For now he's using an old foldable knife, but he wants the other features of his SAK as well.

Brand doesn't really matter. Doesn't even have to be a SAK. Any multi-purpose knife will do. We went to a store that sold Victorinox knives. From what he discussed with the guy in the store it's important that it's not too big. A three layer Victorinox, like the Climber, was the limit size-wise. He caries it every day in the front pocket of his jeans. The climber is 91mm long and 17mm thick. The thickness is the most limiting factor. 95mm long is fine, but 19mm thick is not ok.

The tools he needs/want are:
Knife
Scissors
Nail file (or even better - metal file)
Corkscrew
Bottle opener
Flat head screwdriver

The best match I've found this far is the Wenger Classic 14. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find out how thick it is.

Any other brands I should look at besides Victorinox and Wenger? Does anyone have any specific knife suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

That's the problem. Neither he nor me know what model it was. Only thing I know is that it was a Wenger because it had the serrated scissors.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find out how thick it is.

I got the width of 17mm from SAK Wiki. This value is for the EVO 14 w/c is a Classic 14 with EVO handles.

Either a Classic 14 or EVO 14 will probably fit the bill.

A Vic Compact has a nail file on the shank of the multi purpose hook w/c isn't really much.

Thanks for the replies. Can't believe google didn't find the SAK wiki when I did my research yesterday. Lots and lots of useful and interesting info there!

Are there any other brands of multi-purpose knives worth looking at besides Vic and Wenger?

That has the Victorinox Trail Guide marlboro promotional knife written all over it.

I have one and it has all the tools you mention and is very slim. It adds an eyeglasses screwdriver, ink pen, tweezer, toothpick and a combo bottle/can opener to the mix. Very pocket friendly model. You can find them with relative ease for light money on the bay.

If you don't fancy the Marlboro promotional label, it can be rubbed off (not sure what you use for that but someone on here mentioned it once) or you can easily replace the scales yourself.

Not my pic, by the way. Got it off a Google search.

That really settles it right there. It would be so right to get your dad a Wenger that matches up with what he had. If he's really missing it, he must have really loved it. Get him what he loved and carried all those years.

Thanks for all your helpful replies guys! I just ordered a Wenger Evolution 14 and will give it to dad as a Christmas gift. :D

You can never go wrong with SAK for your Dad. ;) Bought mine one for fathers day a while back

"No. (Unless you get into pliers-based multi-tools from Leatherman.)"

I would respectfully disagree. Take a look at the Buck X-Tract (large blade thumb stud and liner lock, Phillips head and flat head screw drivers, scissors and retractable pliers) - all heavy duty that lock in place and can all be opened and closed with one hand.

Ah, good point. Not my cup of tea, but it is a good, solid option.

Thanks for the suggestion. I looks really hard core :) But I think it would have been too big for dad. And too rough looking.
