Small EDC?

Hello,

I am looking to purchase a small knife for every day carry. I am leaning towards the Spyderco Toad or Spyderco Mouse.

Which of these two would you recommend? Are they good enough for every day carry?

Thanks.

Out those two, I think you would find the Mouse your best choice. It's a big knife in a small package and could probably handle anything you asked of it. I love mine and carry it to work everyday.

Check out the Dragonfly. Mine is SS/serrated. Dragonfly's handle gives a good grip, the blade pattern is great for utility and self-defence, and it's flat ground. Dragonfly costs less than Toad, a lot less than Mouse, and price aside it's better. For the reasons above, and because I said so.

Mouse is my favorite small EDC. (Also love my dragonfly, but different feel altogether.) Mouse locks up like a tank and is "chunky" for its size. The VG10 blade is easy to maintain and scalpel sharp. Also, there is just something ergonomically pleasing about opening and using the knife. To be honest, I didn't think it looked that great from the pictures, but after I got one I just found myself fascinated and keep opening it and finding excuses to use it all day.

Between the Toad and the Mouse, I'd choose the Mouse. It's simply a great little knife. Rock solid.

Also consider the Navigator - also now with VG10 steel. Brilliant knife that performs every bit as well as the Mouse. Cheaper too.

imho hard to beat a plain old delica w/SE, i used the heck outta mine today doing yard work, performed like a champ. mine is one of the smaller ones, like a 2 7/8" blade (or are they all this size??)

I'll agree with the Dragonfly..one of my favourite 'small' knives.

Definitely check out the little almite navigator. Very nice knife, very classy looking, and a great little performer. The Meerkat is also quite nice, very similar form factor as the Navigator, but quite a bit thicker to accomodate the "phantom" lock.

See if you can locate a Navigator w/ G-10 scales. Very Secure in the hand, cuts like a *much* bigger knife.

check out the Spyderco Co-Pilot. Same basic size class as the Toad and Mouse but if you go to:

I think you can still get one for $29.99!!!! This is the SS PE version.

I picked one up just to check it out. It is an impressive little knife at that price.

Like everything in this crazy world super-small knife has its opposite side. Applying more force you can easily come to the point when the handle will turn out to be too small to provide secure grip but the blade will still turn out to be enough big and sharp to deal you pretty serious wound.

So my choice for daily carry knife would be (and really is) a bit bigger knife. New Salsa is just right for me in size, handling comfort and security and I wouldn’t go with smaller knife routinely.

man those are two pretty small knives, especially the toad, that thing is like puny, i'd get something thats at least around 3" and spyderco has many knives for you to choose from

Between the "Mouse" & "Toad" it's definitely the "Mouse";
if cost is a consideration, go for a "Calypso jr" ;) ($24.95)
or "Co-Pilot" ($29.95) from www.eknifeworks.com

How thick is the Toad compared to the Mouse?

I have read some posts state that the Mouse is "chunky".

I want something small, but with a slim profile.

Thanks.

I've both of them in front of me, and I just checked -- it's a little hard to tell, but I think that the toad is about 1/16th thicker than the mouse. They both have a very slim profile.

They're also both great knives. If you work in an office (or the things you use a knife for correspond to office type things), I would strongly suggest you go with the toad -- the blade shape (especially the tip) is far more useful for light chores, I've found. The mouse, on the other hand, is better for hard work, slicing up cardboard, etc. I'd say that I consider the Toad a light-use knife and the Mouse a medium-heavy use knife, but with the qualifier that the Mouse's blade shape makes it hard to use for very precise work (no splinter-picking with the mouse, for example).

I hope it helps.
