Small FB pocket carry?

I just bought a new BM 220 fixed Resister and am contemplating pocket carry. It's easy to 'thumb out' and is only about 7 1/2" in OAL. Do any of you pocket carry FB's, and if so, might you have ideas about how best to make it really work? The BM sheath is OK, and the belt loop is easily removable, but I'm not opposed to using a custom sheath. Thanks in advance for any advice and ideas. BTW, I really like this knife. Very nice!

I've carried several FBs in this manner. Namely the Brusletto Balder, the Becker Necker, Mora2000 and Mora #1. I find the sheath to be the critical factor for what makes a knife friendly for this method of carry. The reason I've carried mainly scandi style blades is that their sheaths are very low profile; that is to say, they're not much bigger than the blade of the knife.

I'm not entirely familiar with the Resistor, but if it's easy to thumb out, you're halfway there already; some of my kydex sheaths are too tight to allow an easy draw from the pocket. My Becker Necker works very nicely and I just use the neck cord as a lanyard. I have a piece of bicycle innertube around the sheath near the top and run the neck cord up through that and around my belt or belt loop. The innertube serves two functions: one is to keep the knife oriented upright in my pocket, and by adjusting where the cord is underneath the innertube, you can adjust the 'cant' of the knife in your pocket. The second function is to provide some friction between knife and pocket, preventing the knife slipping out and also helping keep the sheath in the pocket as you draw the knife. With this setup, one can just pull the neck cord out from under the innertube and use it immediately for neck carry as well. By adding a knot or two to the cord, one can adjust the height that the knife hangs. Experiment and see what works for you. I tried a bunch of different things before arriving at this relatively simple rig...

Sure, I enjoy carrying small fixed blades in pocet sheaths.

Here's a few I've made, sorry for the crappy quality of the second two, I just did quick scans of them.

All of these designs work well for me.

I have a Graham Razel with the leather AND the kydex sheaths. The clip on both of them is so strong, the sheath stays in your pocket when the knife comes out. Although I've used the leather more, the knife still won't drop out if I hold it upside down and shake it.

Another excellent system is the thumb release on Dozier sheaths. My Canoe and Wilderness knives are locked in totally securely, but a touch on the thumb release and the blade can slide right out.

Thanks much for the solid advice and information guys. I believe something of this order will be just the ticket.

Great looking sheaths Cpirtle! Excellent work.

Just thought of this: Sometimes I use a SmartCarry holster in the summer. Bet the mag pouch would hold a small fixed blade pretty easily and provide either strong or weak side access. It's certainly long enough for the 220, although I might have to shift it slightly to the left.

What sort of small FBs do you guys all carry? I was thinking about adding one to my EDC list.

I believe all the guys who posted previously mentioned the FB's they pocket carry. For me, it is a Benchmade 220 Fixed Resistor. I agree with madcap; it would be interesting to hear from more folks who pocket carry FB's---method and type of knife.

Does anyone have/carry a Shivworks Clinch Pick? I know it's supposed to be a tactical, but it looks like it might be just a nice pocket-sized slicer...

I carry a Gene Ingram SLK in the daily rotation. The sheath is like a belt sheath but with no loop. It covers up to about half the handle and has no clip. I just drop it in my pocket and go.

A little late, but here's a pic:

I carry a Graham Brothers EDC fixed blade - it is a Wharncliffe with black micarta handles and red slabs - it is absolutely one of the best knives I have seen. The sheath sits NICE and low in your pocket - I carry mine in the back right pocket of my 5.11 pants/shorts and it also rides on the outside strap of my EDC backpack - Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon.

I know that you would be impressed with the Graham Brothers knives - GREAT fit and finsh and their steel is done by Paul Bos - BEAUTIFUL knife. Here is a pic or two of it along with some other blades of mine...small Sebbie and Mnandi (for size reference)

This one shows the knife in it's sheath:

I don't mean to take this thread off-topic, but are you sure that it is 7.5" OAL? The only reason I ask is that I am looking....ok....drooling over these ever since you posted this thread , and I have seen three different numbers for the OAL: 5.5" (BM specs), 6.5" (dealer specs), and 7.5" (your specs).

Thanks,

Matthew

Usually a Dozier straight personal. It goes right in the pocket without any problems.

The very small size Dozier K-28 Personal with its minimal horizontal kydex drops right into a pants, vest or coat pocket quite easily. The sheath can be popped right off with the thumb while grasping the handle with the rest of the fingers. It is a small package that has big performance. A favorite of mine for years now.

Mine ones are the CQB-2 and Basic #3 . . . might be a bit too big for some, but these suite me welll.

Matthew,

I measured again to be sure, and the OAL is just shy of 7.5". Looks like exactly 7 3/8"....unless I have a defective ruler. You might be looking at specs for the 210, which is 5.5", I believe. I really like this 220. Bet you would, too. I also like the 210---probably my next buy.

G'day,
I like either the Dozier Straight Personal or a Bark River-both the Mikro and the Mini are easily pocketable. (Although it's almost a shame not to use the Dozier horizontally on a belt--it just works so right!)

Doh! :footinmou

Yah, I've handled both the 210 and the 220 at my local BM dealer, but didn't really give either much thought until I saw this thread. The 220 is pretty cool, but I think I'd not be comfortable with a 7.5" knife in my pockets. Maybe I should swing by the store and double-check!

Thanks,

Matthew

Here's a link to a brief discussion of a nice edc size fixed blade that was recently custom made for me by Charles May. Very affordable and well made. The knife and pocket sheath fit comfortably in my back or front jeans pocket. I also have to highly recommend the Dozier Arkansas Traveller with the horizontal thumb release belt sheath...very easy draw. Check out the Charles May knife at:

Hey Guys...

ASP..

If you are interested,, I'm in the process of making sheaths for both the Benchmade 210 and 220..These will both be multi-carry rigs, that should work nicely for pocket carry...

Great knives..

Drop me a note if you are interested...
