Small fixed blade for snow

So after fumbling around with folders while wearing gloves, I've decided that a small fixed blade would be much easier. I have no problem using my Rat-7 with gloves on, but I often find it a bit large to carry with me all the time. So I'm looking for a small fixed blade for general use. I would like it to be fairly corrosion resistant but I have no problem cleaning the blade after use. I like the looks of some of the Bark River knives, but I dont anything about A2. The benchmade fixed griptillian has also caught my eye

So basically im looking for
Fixed blade, under 5 inch blade length, easy to handle with gloves on, and appropriate for use in and around snow.

Thats any easy one. Id go with the Fallkniven F1. it fits your specs. and ive used mine in snow, rain, and in the swamps.

How heavy a blade are you looking for? If you need it more for slicing than chopping or prying, I recommend a Mora, especially the stainless Clipper models or even the Mora 2000.

Look down the whole page. There are wood and plastic handles, carbon and stainless blades, some variety in blade shape and especially length. Basically, inexpensive & hard-working knives.

Nra Snody(made by Benchmade)here is me with mine.....great little knife, very sturdy, made of 440C and comes razor sharp !

I second the motion by Pit Man but will go further to say ANY Snody fixed blade!

Also Ontario RAT-3 in D2 or RAT-5 in 1095 carbon.

PIT MAN - What did the dog do wrong? Couldn't you just discipline him maybe?

Hi,

This will be my preferred small fixed blade... A Busse Game Warden (this is one of many models). The large seb with it gives you some idea of its size. There are a few for sale in the Exchange forums. INFI is corrosion resistant, and I believe the coating helps in that regard as well:

Sometimes they need a firm hand other times a firm blade:D

My wife says you must be joking cos I put my dog before her and my kid !!!!

Walkabout,

I love that Game Warden (Sebenza's nice too!). One of these days after I win the lottery....... :)

Thanks for the info. The Moras look nice, but theyre a little thinner than i'd like. I'm leaning toward the F1 or a BM 220

Take a look at Doug Ritter's new RSK Mk3 - also known as the "fixed Rittergrip". It is a very modified fixed griptilian. It has a modified 4.5" S30V blade with a much higher grind than the regular griptilian, a much nicer machined G10 handle w/ full tang and a lanyard hole, and a ballistic nylon sheath with a kydex insert for safety. The sheath has a myriad of different attachment points that provide lots of functionality.

It is really a nice knife! Well worth the price.

Much more information at http://www.equipped.org/rsk_mk3.htm

The Grohmann #3 has a good handle for gloved use. I read in a review that was one of the criteria for it's use by the Canadian military. I have it in both saber and flat grind (stainless), and prefer the flat for general use. The standard handle is rosewood, but it's available in micarta. The #4 is also a great larger knife that works with gloves or choppers.

Yeah KenK,
I second that knife! For some reason I keep forgetting about that blade. All reports on the Mk3 are outstanding. There's a current issue in one of the knife magazines doing a review on it right now. I've also heard that it comes, NIB, sharp enough to make people bleed before they touch it.:D

Go for the Fallkniven F1:thumbup: . I've used mine in all conditions (snow, rain, heat) and it's a great little knife. The S1 is a tad longer (5") blade, so you might consider that one to.

I own the the BM Griptilian FB and like it very much. Krayton inserts in the handle, nice stiff sheath, good steel and a great price.

Also Ritter Griptilian FB, Fallkniven F1, or RAT-3 are good choices (as already mentioned).

Ontario is coming out with a D2 RAT-5 (so they tell me), so you may want to wait on that one if it's your choice.

Regards

The bark rivers are excellent, A2 isn't stainless but don't demand much attention.
Some find the handles of the Bark Rivers to small.
For me they're good, but I haven't used them with gloves on yet.

The fixed griptilian looks also very good.
The fixed ritter is nicer but cost/performance I certainly would pick the benchmade.

If you want a slicer, the best for the money are of course the moras.
Buy a rubber handled one for a good grip, but be quick.
Now Eriksson and Frosts are merging, a lot of models will disappear.

But finally if I where you I would stay with Randall and buy a TAK-1
5.75" (?) handle will offer plenty of grip
