Small fixed-blade knife for daughter?

Hello, I'm fairly new here, and would like to ask some advice. My daughter has asked for a sheath knife for Christmas, for our camping and woodswalking trips. I am proud that a pre-teen girl would value such a thing! I would like to purchase a small (3-4") bladed, good stainless steel fixed-blade knife, drop point or clip point with a wood or stag handle. I would like to spend less than $50, but might spend up to $100 for the "perfect fit". Something along the line of the Benchmade Outbounder, but I'm worried about the lack of a gaurd and the chance of her hand slipping up on the blade on this particular model. Any suggestions/ input are most welcome, but it must be fairly traditional and not threatening-looking (if that makes any sense!). Thanks in advance, take care! Regan

Greetings! as a Buck-nut, may i suggest their Vangard line.4 1/8 inch drop point blade in 420 hc steel.they have also been made in BG42 steel with a green frenchwood handle.that was called "Master Series"and there were a group made without the fancy title called "overruns" I heard that Bass pro shops have them in ATS34 steel.thats worth checking out. the standard wood handle is very nice as is the design in general.they are also in your suggested price range.whatever you chose, your daughters interest is great.
guy:)

I ran into the same situation a couple of years ago with my girls. I'd take a really close look at some the nordic style knives at http://www.ragweedforge.com/. I don't think you will find better looking or performing knives for the money.

How about Marbles. They make a great product. Definatly "non-threatening", very traditional. They will fall somewhere between the $50 and $100 depending on handle material. Bayou Laforche has a good selection and they are a very reputable online dealer.

I have to concur with Loki.. For the price, the Pukos and Moras are great. Marbles is good too, and you might check http://www.agrussell.com. He's usually got something good too, like his "woodswalker" which sports a 3" blade, or the "bird & trout". You have lots of choices in the 50-100 dollar range.

Woodtroll,

I have a small custom knife I'd let go if you are interested. I think it would suit a young lady just dandy.

It is a Wayne Hendrix semi-skinner in ATS-34, 3" blade, satin finish, new condition. In a light brown open top leather sheath, good fit. Cocobolo handle, in a fairly reddish color, pretty wood, more reddish than Cocobolo usually is (usually more burgundy). It is Wayne's #11 model. Tapered tang.

It doesn't have a true guard (that's why price is so reasonable), but handle shape is such that if forms a guard just by shape.

Sorry, no pics quite yet... was going to put it up for sale in a week or so when I get pics taken at work. I looks something like the Dozier semi-skinner model called the K-8, although it is better proportioned:

Drop me a line if interested. $75 + shipping. rdangerer@home.com

Wayne does nice work... think he is a George Herron protege.

I have an ATS-34 blade, red linen micarta handle I am just about done with, just needs sheath. The handle is kinda smallish, too. And i have a black powder coated warnie of ATS, also needs sheath. Email me for price if you are interested. :)

The above suggestions are good ones. Also you might like to check out the Benchmade Outbounder. Let us know which one she picks. Good luck

Okay, I know it's a little out of your price range but someone had to do it....

For a knife that will last her a lifetime of use and be something she can pass down to her children I would go for a custom Mike Irie Sport series handled in stag. For the money his knives are amazing and come in a variety of blade styles.

I just picked up one of his Sport 700's and really like it.

Bladeart sells the entire Sport line for $119.95 so it's just busting your cap a little plus you can get her a beautiful custom.

The Sport 600 looks great for a young girl IMHO.

Woodtroll,
Your daughter definitely can't go wrong with SPYDERCO Bill Moran Featherweight knife, especially with drop point version. Amazing cutter, very decent steel, comfortable multi-carry sheath.
