What is it that a small fixed blade knife can do that a folder of the same size cannot? I am talking 2-2 1/2 inch fixed blades here. Can someone please educate me? I might learn somthing here!

Always be deployed and is much stronger if made well. Folders will always have a major weakness in the multiple pieces, locks and mainly pivots (at least by comparison).

Benchmade has a couple of new models -- very nice. Check out Ragweed Forge, too; lots of options there.

Thats a good point Big Jim! I never thought about that. Also in extreme cold you don't have to mess with opening & closeing the blade...a major point to consider for me!

As observed in other threads, however, carry of fixed blades is illegal in many jurisdictions.

Clean an animal or fish with each. When it comes to the cleanup you'll quickly see one good reason why some prefer a small fixed blade for that type of duty. I don't particularly enjoy digging blood and guts out of the action and all the nooks and crannies of a folder.

Small fixed blades, in addition to quick deployment, enjoy the benefit of no moving parts, also much easier to clean after use.

Probably the most important distinction between the two! I also think that you can get more 'functionality' out of a smaller fixed blade than a medium-sized folding knife. Of course, this may have more to do with the design of the knife.

I've been carrying a Benchmade 210 Activator non-stop recently, and oddly enough no one even bats and eyelash when I bring it out to cut something. My mini Griptilian and Harsey T-1 drew more 'concerned' glances than the 210 has.

A small fixed blade can be worn in a belt sheath thereby avoiding those unsightly bulges in your pocket from a folder. Kind of like a chick wearing a thong to avoid panty lines.:D

I was carrying a Greco Li'l Dangler when I was visiting my sister and brother-in-law in Central Ohio a few years back and had it clipped to my belt loop when I went into the local small town. I was warned by an off-duty deputy sheriff that it was illegal to carry a fixed blade within the town limits in this rural small town, much to my surprise. It was just my good luck that he did not see grandfatherly me as threatening. I left the knife in the trunk of my car until I got back to my sister's house where I switched it for my Spydie StarMate, a rather larger knife. You go figure the logic.

But in Canada, there are much more rules about folders (gravity, centrifugal force and a few more) and it's to the cop's discretion, so it's just more simple to carry a FB.
