As most know, I only take in orders for folder sheaths, leaving the fixed blade world to my friend Sandy Morrissey, Dave aka Lifter4him and to Kenny Rowe when it comes to leather and to Normark with things pertaining the kydex realm. But everynow and again I need to make something for me, in this case it was for my New Scott Cook small fix blade knife, blade is only 3" long, very nice knife by the way!

Well the idea offered here will hopefully help out you guys when you go to make your sheath.

Main idea is that you don't have to make the belt loop only a certain length and you don't have to stitch the belt loop from inside the sheath either, depending on blade length of course, so I'm keeping this to knives up to say 4" long blades...

Here is the front of the sheath with some texture embossing around the handle portion, looks the same from the front side...

Forgot to add a link to some pics of the knife too!

What you do is, make the BELT LOOP long enough to reach the bottom of the sheath...

BUT do rough up the leather and apply GOOD contact cement along the bottom of the sheath, BARGE Cement is recommended, then when you stitch along the side, stop at one point, like shown here, and pull the thread onto the top side of the sheath, fold down the belt loop and glue in place, punch through your holes and pull the one side thread back through and continue stitching around to the tip of the sheath. As you can see, the belt loop is stitched along side, there is a lot of clearance so you can, when you go to sit down, slide the sheath up on the belt, or tilt the sheath to make it more comfortable when carrying it.

Hope this opens up some possiblities for you guys and gals, another PLUS to this type of sheath, you now have TWO layers of leather between you and a razor sharp blade!

That is a good idea it works very good if you spend
a lot of time in a car or pickup, the sheath will
tilt and be more comfortable.

Great design, thanks for the help.

I have an order for a small bird and trout knife to be carried in a pocket your style look perfect.

Thanks Guys and Sandy for the tip...;)
You can slip the whole package into your pocket for just pocket carry as well, those times you don't want or can't have it on your belt.

From the one pic of the back of the sheath, where the thread starts...going from the thread and then across the belt loop from that area down is all Glued down as tightly as possible, the need to really rough up the leather to allow the glue to take hold is important, I have a very ragged piece of 60 grit sand paper that I use to rough it up and then I also take a knife...just happen to have one handy :), and with the tip also scrap into the leather to get down to the rough meat of the leather. Then make sure you apply enough Barge Cement on each side, allow to dry and press together and I use a bone folder to rub down hard on that area, even if it does come up a little, the main holding point is where the threads are so not to worry if you see it come a part a little.

This method also makes it handy that when you go to put your knife into the sheath, there is little if no chance of slicing the stitching you would otherwise have inside for the belt loop...

As to pricing and such, it's on a knife related basis but as mentioned in several posts through out the forums I don't take on fixed blade sheath orders so this post was for some handy info that I wanted to share with you guys and gals. But I knew it would also spark some interest in having me make some...but no thanks fellas! I leave that to the esteemed Mr. Morrissey! :)

Hey Gary..

Very nice job.. I like the heavy duty-ness of the sheath...

As for as your folder rigs are concerned,, I've got a Grohmann R300, its baasically the folding version of the R1 fixed blade.. Very nice large hunting folder,,and I'm interested in one of your rigs for it...

I'll have to drop you a note and see what you can do with it...I think it would look sweet in something custom by the Great G2..:)

Eric....

Thanks Eric, we'll have to work something out!

Had an email asking about the other side of the sheath, so here is a scan of that side as well, notice that I used my bone folder tool to form the sheath flat against the back of the handle and blade and softly formed the handle transition to the blade part of the sheath.
