hey guys i was looking for a small fixed blade knife for self defence and was wondering what your thoughts or suggestions were, by small i mean blade length less then 3 inches. My price range is $150 or less any help would be greatly appreciated

emerson lagriffe. Perfect for sd and easy as hell to conceal. But really as omaha said a firearm is really ideal for sd. A knife is rather bad for sd especially if you are not trained.

Truthfully??

Buy a gun---avoid a knife fight at all costs.

as much as i would prefer a gun i cant due to several reasons 1 it is very hard (read impossible) to get a Cary permit in Rhode Island. 2 being only 18 i can only buy long guns which i already have several of. 3 even if i could get a handgun they are prohibited in my dorms.

for SD, i'd suggest OC spray and impact weapon before a knife. even if you're trained, a knife fight is the last place you want to be. if you must have a knife, find something that can be used for general utility, not a dedicated fighter. you want to avoid legal headaches, especially with the PC/sheeple mindset that most likely dominates your campus. check these links:

Victorinox 4" paring knife. They're cheap, sturdy and disposable. Take your money and spend it on training. When you have developed a good level of skill, then look at high dollar knives. Remember that sticks and canes are oftimes better weapons than knives, and guns are better in many cases, better than sticks. Your choice is often dictated by what you can carry without running afoul of the law. If you are a young, physically fit person, you should think about a combat cane. There are several vendors of sticks and training videos. That should get you started.

thanks for the response the lagriffe looks promising. i carry a kubaton on my key chain and have that with me at all times i also have a spyderco captain that is my edc knife. i need the blade to be less then 3 inches because that is legal in RI. i dont want to deal with the headache of trying to explain why i had a illegal weapon on me. i attend culinary school so they are more lenient of knives than other weapons seeing how we are supplied with a knife kit at the beginning of the school year. As for the issue of training does anyone know of any good schools near providence?

Use a small pistol. If you insist on carrying a small knife "for self defense" get one of the Moras from www.ragweedforge.com and it will serve you as well as anything else, unless maybe you've had years and years of intensive training and you're an honest-to-God certified spook. Then something more exotic could be used to good effect. You might want to consider a push dagger from Cold Steel, too.

A gun is the best thing to take to a knife fight. Sometimes it's pretty difficult to tell the winner in a knife fight since they both end up at room temperature. that being said i've always been a fan of push daggers because they are easy to use and it's difficult for someone to take it from you. later, ahgar

Despite the impression you might get in PracTac, only fools choose to fight with knives.

Absent the option of a gun...

First run. If you can't run, spray the offender with something nasty.

A knife is pretty low on the "to do" list when faced with a bad situation.

I talked to many police officers in GA about knife fighting. Don't risk it. Guyon's right. If you can run, then run and fast. I use that rule of thumb whether I face a gun, knife, or open hands. Plus, (I don't know if this is true where you live) if you pull out knife on someone, you're going to jail.

Your best bet is to learn to pee your pants, with a wicked smile on your face, on demand. No-one would want to beat-up a guy who has just wet himself and looks crazy.:D.:D.

OK so it seems that a knife is not the best choice for self defense any ideas on what else i could carry? I feel the need to mention why i am interested in a self defense weapon recently two students of my collage were shot across the street from the campus one died and the other was hospitalized. So with this in mind i was hoping for any advice on what to carry. Once again thanks for the advice. I must admit that peeing my pants wasnt what i was expecting to hear :D

If you are interested in self defense, and not just a knife, then search out some Krav Maga lessons. Even Krav says that if you have to defend against a knife, whether you have one too or not, you will probably get cut. Krav may keep you from being killed though.
All the same, be aware that if someone wants to shoot you from a distance of more than 8 feet or so, you can only hope they are a bad shot.

probably the best self defense tool is being aware of your sorroundings and paying attention to what is happening. It's like your mom said, "you need to stay out of places like that". Quite often, not always, people get into trouble either doing something stupid or being someplace they shouldn't. And really in the states if you have a dirtbag bother you he will most likely have a gun, and any knife loses against any gun. be careful, ahgar

If you are that concerned with the safety around your campus then your best bet is to travel with other people. Traveling alone will make you a more likely target, while traveling in larger groups helps to dissude this type of thing happening.

If you absolutely feel the need to carry somthing then I would go with the suggestion of the cane/walking stick idea. The main point of self defense is to keep the attacker away from your body (mainly so they can't stick you with a knife). A 3-4 foot long cane with some heft to it will be more effective in self defense then a 3 inch knife blade will.

Just my $.02 worth.

The highest value pepper spray in a small dispenser you can find - and carry it on your keychain in your hand - ready for use. Get two. Try a can on a target at 1-5yd - pulled from your pocket - make sure you know how to use it and where to aim (FACE). An open knife or a handgun are considered 'brandishing' at the least - assault with intent is likely. Either will likely get you a ride in a police car. The pepper spray will stop attackers, if employed properly, at least giving you the opportunity for a hasty retreat, the absolute best thing to do.

Like ahgar said - know your surroundings - stay out of obvious problem areas - ensure you have good escape routes - and stay vigilante.

Of course, if you are in a 'castle law' state - and on your own property - recall that 'Indiana Jones' had the right idea re protection against a knife/sword-wielding attacker - a 1917 .45ACP revolver. Of course, I'm jaded - I live in Alabama... a clean record all but insures a carry permit. And... I don't go anywhere without either an S&W Airweight in .38 0r .44 Special in my pocket.

My Glock 21 (.45ACP) was under the truck seat when I was working alone as an AMERICORPS volunteer for Habitat for Humanity on a new house just after my retiring from teaching, when three youths - on bicycles - one with a .38 - demanded my wallet. The timely arrival of a plumbing contractor, horn a-blowing, made them scatter. I bought a smaller .45 I could pocket - worked another week - then 'retired' again, a far more sane approach. Stay out of harm's way.

My wife's newest co-teacher friend at work, a 20yr old part-time worker/college student, was car-jacked on the way home from work by two bg's two weeks back. He fought - probably saving his life. They shot him four times - neck, arm, thigh, and stomach. Fortunately, he will have a full recovery. He, like me, was lucky. A knive would have done neither of us any good. Be safe - use the cerebral filter to guide you away from harm.
