small fixed blades as throwers

Anyone found any small fixed blades that are stout and balanced enough to be throwers as well as general utility?

I know that they are both apples and oranges, but has anyone discovered a good balance between the two?

FlyingCanOpener,

How are you defining small? Most "small" blades (as I define it...under 4") don't have sufficient weight to really stick into a solid target.

With enough snap of the wrist, you could stick a fairly symmetrical blade like a thin dagger or stiletto at 4" or under, but you would probably get mixed results, and the blade would get chewed up after a few practice sessions.

That said, you can stick a lot of small objects. A former training buddy of mine was very good at sticking small-diner soup spoons in anything from a pretty good range, and another old colleague was skilled at sticking nails into 2 x 4s from ten feet away. So it *can* be done, but one aspect often outweighs the other.

The only smallish fixed blade that I know to be a decent thrower, is the Tops Street Scalpel. Its made out of 1/4 stock 1095 and the handle is fairly narrow with nice weight behind it. Nicely balanced and sticks in rock solid with 2 full spins at about 12-15 feet. About 7 1/4inch OA (estimate)

I broke the tip off (missed target and hit concrete, oops) but was able to easily fix it on a grinder making the tip more stury that the original needle thin point that it came with from the factory. I still throw it once in a while and EDC it for SD.

short kabars are about the best out there. i throw both short and large kabars, i also use the same knives for work. i never go out of the house with out a kabar on my hip

I started out throwing little Jaguar knives. They were only about 3 inches long including the handle with a leaf shaped blade. They were pretty easy to stick from distances of about 20 feet or less, and i've managed to stick themfrom about 7 or 8 yards, even though i'm not that good.

Sounds good to me.

Knife throwing is the only combat-oriented sport where a 60% success rate is considered talent!
