A question for those of you who've created small benchtop forges of the sort created from one, two, or three soft insulating bricks or refractories packed into a paint can... Which kind do you prefer and why? My purpose for building one is for heat-treating small knives and creating small tools.

Get a section of pipe or AC duct about 6" round and 10-12" long. That and a piece of 1" thick kaowool, plus a small package of satanite will make a good forge. The wool and satanite, plus al, sorts of forge building stuff can be ordered from High Temp Tools and Refractory.
For the burner, get the small burner from Atlas Tool and Forge.
HT is a bit tricky in small forge, but it can be done. Be sure to read Larrin's article on HT in a Forge.
