hello folks i know someone somewhere has probably asked this before but i could not find it. Could i please get you all who have small gas forges to post a picture and some detail about the forge. Such as inside materials is it neccesary to put the wool in and if you do, do you have to coat it with something and what do you need to coat it with?
Also are firebrick absolutle neccesary. My dad and i would like to biuld a small forge
for just messin around with, i can get a peice of pipe for the body but i do not know what all i need for the inside. Any pics or comments would be great, also i would like to keep this thing low cost as much as possible.

If you do a search for "forge building", or "gas forge" you will get enough information to keep you busy for quite a few days.

Low cost... easy... http://knifedogs.com/showthread.php?16064-Build-a-Gas-Forge-Tutorial

where can i find the wool and coating, i have a good idea of what i want and how i want it
but i just do not know where to get a few of the things i need. i still think it would be kinda neat to see
others forges big or small. i really get some good ideas from looking at what other folks
have done with their setups of forges, anvils, and shops. so feel free to post pics.

that is pretty much the way i was going to biuld 1 also, but where did you get wool and refractory coating?

Probably the most common construction is the shell, a layer of Inswool (or Kaowool) covered by a layer of Satanite (1/8" to 1/4" applied in thin layers) and a wash of ITC-100. If you are planning on doing any welding there are a couple of more steps. I recommend a layer of Mizzou on the bottom of the forge with a layer of Bubble Alumina. These will resist the flux.

are you talking about forge welding? if so i was not planning on it.
the main purpose i want a forge is really just becuase i want 1.
i think it would be fun to just mess around with different scrap
metal and see what i can turn it into. now with that said i do not
want something that will not last i would like the best quality for
the smallest buck. i will check out the other sites that were posted for the inswool
and the refractory stuff. thanks

I have a really small forge made with a paint can. I used the ceramic wool and santinite. It is heated with a mapp gas torch. I can do about a 4-5" blade with it.

i can't post pictures on here, guess I will have to upgrade my membership.

how long does a tank of propane usually last? a tank the size of 1 that you would use for a bbq grill.
