I have been longing for a better small game skinning knife for a while now... Mostly I will be using if for squirrels but also the occasional rabbit. My specs are around a 3 in blade. I don't have a specific steel but I want one with fairly good edge resistance, I have been using my crkt folts minimalist but typically have to sharpen after two squirrels. Also forgot, the knife has too be fixed blade.

I use my Becker BK11 all the time. Heck - for small game, you could do lots worse than using a SAK.

I've seen some nice smaller caping knives lately. Maybe start with A.G. Russell.

Dpx hest &hest2 fit that description. You don't have a $ amount so also recommend fallkniven kolt, wm, or my favorite the juni

You might try the Grohmann bird and trout knife. I have the original design model. I skinned, quartered, and boned out a deer and it still had a good edge. The design of the knife is great for game processing.

Look at GEC's H20 series or a Becker bk11/14.

Bark River Bravo EDC with the Hunter shaped blade.

3.3 inch blade
3.5oz

Oops sorry. I see now the price limit.

There's a decent beretta loveless design hunter for around $50. Also I like the drop point on the bk16

Buck Vanguard 192. The one that Cabelas sells costs a tad over $100 and it is in S30V steel and Paul Bros heat treat with a nice rosewood handle. I just bought one and I can tell you it is a natural for hunting use from small to large. If you search, you will find them with lesser steel within your price range. I believe the S30V will hold an edge longer than 420HC which I believe the regular one is, but still a useable knife.

The Kershaw 1080 is well under $80.
As always the Bk11 is a fine choice.
For what you will be doing less is more, A large blade will just get in the way.

Buck makes that nice ErgoHunter Caping knife for small game and it is only about $40. Buck also makes the Hartsook in S30V for about $28.
Personally, my favorite knife for squirrels, rabbits, and other small game is a large or medium Stockman with a coping/sheepfoot secondary blade, a clip point primary, and a spey tertiary blade. This type of knife has served me many hunting seasons. (Mine is a Buck)

I'm thinking of going with the kershaw 1080. It looks like it has good ergos and has tons of positive feedback. But if you have any other suggestions my decision isn't final.

Are you skinning the whole thing out? Or do you make a cut across the back and then peel the skin off with hands?

I picked up one of these queen skinners in d2 recently and had the opportunity to try in on a whitetail a few weeks ago. It was very comfortable and made quick work of the deer. For 60 bucks it's a heck of a deal. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1418744613.253601.jpg( not my pic)

Bird and trout is pretty nice, but if you're comfortable with the profile, the shrade sharpfinger is pretty classic.
