i picked up a small hatchet at a garage sale for $3. Its about 9" total length and the blade would be about 2 1/4". It has a hickory handle and a leather sheath. The axe head is marked master hunter no.110 and the sheath is stamped master hunter as well. It's a cool little hatchet and I can definately see myself using it for hunting. Anybody ever heard of such a thing? I'd be interested to know rarity and value. It seems to be very good quality and took a keen edge.

Sounds like a mini hatchet or sounding hatchet. Probably similar to the Vaughn sub zero.

Hey brother, what you have is an "cleaver" of a sort that old time hunters would use to cut out the brisket of a deer.

I realize my answer is ONLY eight years late... however, it was mentioned by Mors Kohanski in a video about axes that this particular ax was used as a "brisket ax" by hunters. Bizarre, but useful little bugger!
