That's a beautiful piece but ive gotta wonder hitachi white at 60-61 HRC in an axe might not hold up. God forbid you miss and hit a rock. Or even a knot. Not sure the price as they don't seem to sell their products. Not sure who does but a lot of nice stuff on their site

Looks like a Japanese version of a Carpenters Axe.

Think I'll stick with GB :)
 
I never heard the bear claw story, or saw one of those adzes. Very cool.
I had one hatchet when I was in Japan (didn't need that, though I lived in wild Tohoku). It had a label describing its traditional iron-with -steel insert manufacture. No claw-marks.
It's terrible the crazy decisions you make when you leave packing too late. Hatchets are flat, I could have squeezed that in.
