Hey guys! I like many of you have been heavily influenced in my collecting, and life, by Jackknife! That being said all his stories of small pen knives and peanuts has me looking for one to try out. I'm wondering if you lot know where I can find a good two bladed knife with one spring, and maybe stag handles? I'm considering a peanut, but the slim one spring idea appeals to me :P And I haven't really been able to find any like that around, I know stockman has a sweet one. Anyway any points in the right directions, or pictures of your small peanut/pen knives would be appreciated! And a big thank you to Jackknife for all the great stories :D

A good single spring 2-blade pen style is a Boker 8288HH-this is their stag version which has stainless blades. I have a stainless one in mop & 1 carbon with staglon type panels and they are excellent little knives. Case also makes a 2-blade pen that is similar in stag if you choose. I prefer the Boker in the pen over Case (I own more Case knives than Bokers' though).
I have more recently purchased one of the 2-spring Case pocket worn red bone peanuts and have found it to be way more useable than I initially gave it credit for. Good luck in your seek, hope you get something fun.:)

i carry my buck 309 daily and i'm sure you will find many uses for the small knife that will make you wonder why you ever carried a tactikool one handed folder. the buck 309 fits your requirements as well and is made in the usa. it comes in the black (like mine) and yellow plastic as well as the classic buck diamond wood.

i've wanted to snag one of those bokers for a while, they are really sharp looking blades. :-p

Hey Jesse! Here's a gratuitous shot of my Chestnut bone CV peanut - not a single spring like you're looking for, but certainly worth considering anyway.

Case makes a darn nice pen knife, too. Single spring, so it's thinner than the two blade peanut, but also longer by about half an inch. However, I don't recall seeing any pen knives with stag handles.

You're welcome, Jesse! Yes, the blades are fairly thin on the 'nut - it's a great little slicer. The blades on the pen knife are a little thicker & longer, of course.

Hey Jesse, thanks for the compliments on my ramblings.

For a vry nice little knife, try finding one of the older Boker 240's. They were available in nice rosewood or stag. Not a single spring, but more along the lines of a peanut. A very compact little knife that you don't notice in you pocket. If your really dead set on a single spring knife, do try one of the Buck 309 series. My friend Wayne has been a die hard of them for the couple decades I've known him. He does everything with that little knife, and I have nightmares over some of the heavy abuse he's dished out. None of which seems to have had an adverse affect on it.

Another knife if you just want to try the pattern, but don't want to spend a great deal of money on it untill you know if you like it, is the Victorinox pocket pal. Very light weight, very slim, and very well finished off, with Victorinox's outstanding factory lifetime backing.

Of course, if you ask me for a recomendation of a small knife, I'd go witht the chestnut CV peanut. Of late, the Case knives I've seen have been outstanding in fit and finsh, and the CV is soome very nice steel to work with. Holds and edge very well, and is easy to touch up on the bottom of a coffee mug in a few minutes. Of course, you do understand that I have a personal bias in that direction. :D

Good luck with your search Jesse. Sometimes the search for a knife can go on for many years. Some us have been at it a lifetime, and are still happily searching, much to the distress of our back accounts and better halves.

Carl.

Have you looked into the case baby butterbean? there a similar size to the peanut but a bit beefier and have a single back spring. I'm sold on the little bean.

Thanks for the response Jackknife, that boker is really nice looking! :D The reason I say single backspring is that from the look of it, I think the peanut might be too round, like it might be tricky to get a solid grip on the thing, but that's just from pictures.

Triq I haven't actually looked at those yet, they are pretty sweet looking with the long pull and swedge

When you're looking at single backspring, small whittlers don't forget the mini copperhead. It's a great little knife.

lots of options! found this guy on world knives, bit too expensive, and not carbon, but looks nice.

Oh man, you would have to post that picture! That's the knife I had a weird dream about a while back. Don't know the implications of that, but I need another knife like I need the measles.
:D

I really like single spring knives, they are a good test of quality too as getting those blades in a confined space is no mean feat:thumbup:

Not sure what your size limits for 'small' are but here's some suggestions:

The CASE yellow handled Pen is a firm favourite, a bit bigger than the Böker equivalent, comes in carbon or stainless, a real must have. Stag is trickier unless you buy antique which is of course dear. Try a Great Eastern Half Congress, 2 blades and single spring. The stag one I have is very well made but a bit fat in the handles for my liking, the bone versions will be slimmer. Rough Rider make a very inexpensive but really decent Half Whittler in Amber Bone, Spear/Pen with longpull matchstrikes, about 3 and 5/8" The Half Whittler pattern is also made by CASE and this will have Clip/Pen, many versions maybe even stag! Eisenhowers from CASE might suit too. Hen&Rooster make a small Canoe on single spring, 3" It's a bigger and I feel more credible knife than the CASE Baby Butterbean which is too undersized for my own tastes. Finally, but it is a bigger knife, Queen Cutlery's Muskrat is a truly excellent single spring knife but you might not fancy having identical blades. It's very easy in the pocket though.

Good luck! W

I don't know about the measles but I do know that you need one of these. The pen is perfect and the Wharncliffe could only be better if it was CV.

jacknife's stories have convinced me to buy my boys peanuts for Christmas
